We sat down with graduate Saleha Anwer to discuss her journey through the MA program, her thesis on Hegel & cancel culture, and how she approached the challenge of writing her thesis while also being a new parent. See her spotlight here: carleton.ca/philosophy/2024/…

Folks: I am a *huge fan* of informational interviews. They're the single most useful tool for PhDs seeking an industry role. Check out my free guide on how to conduct them linked below. That said, there are a few key norms that info-interview requestors should abide by. A 🧵:

Huge news in the Loeb and Southam buildings at Carleton_U as the tunnel linking us to the rest of campus has finally reopened. We’ve been our own separate world for the last two months.

PhDs who landed industry roles without internships or contract work experience: how did you make the leap? (side note: I'm hosting a panel of PhDs talking about this very topic tomorrow. Attendance is full, but I look forward to sharing the video to dive in further here!)

Not sure who needs to hear it: One poor presentation doesn't define your intelligence, knowledge and abilities to perform in future presentations. Public speaking is hard but feasible with practice! #AcademicChatter #phdlife #PhD

Owning up to your mistakes doesn’t cast doubt on your credibility. Admitting you were wrong shows that you care about getting it right. Recognizing moments of bad judgment is a step toward demonstrating good judgment. Issuing a correction is a mark of intellectual integrity.

Impostor syndrome is not a sign that other people are overestimating you. It's more likely that you're underestimating your potential. Confidence is often a consequence of growth, not a cause. Believing in your ability is less important than believing in your ability to improve.
