🎓 The Pell Promise is expanding nationwide! Beginning in fall 2027, Carroll College will expand its Pell Promise to cover remaining tuition costs for qualifying Pell-eligible first-year students from any state, as well as qualifying transfer students. Originally launched for Montana students in 2024, the program is opening doors to more students who may not have thought a Carroll education was within reach. To qualify, students must receive a federal Pell Grant and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The program covers remaining tuition costs after eligible federal and institutional aid is applied. “We have seen the difference the Pell Promise can make for Montana students, and we are excited to extend that opportunity to more students,” said Dr. Jennifer Glowienka, president of Carroll College. 💻 carroll.edu/news-events/news…

Sophia Jocson chose Carroll for its welcoming community, small class sizes, and strong science programs and pre-professional pathways. 🥽 Originally from Lynnwood, Washington, Sophia is studying Chemistry at Carroll, where she is involved as a Peer Minister, a member of Gold Team, and the Social Media Manager for the Research Club. One of Sophia’s most impactful experiences at Carroll has been participating in summer research through the Chemistry Department. The opportunity allowed her to connect classroom concepts with real-world applications and deepen her passion for science. “It connected what I was doing in the classroom to the real world and brought my learning to life. This opportunity reminded me why I’m so passionate about science and why I came to Carroll in the first place.” Beyond the classroom, Sophia also values the opportunities she has to deepen her Catholic faith through formation groups, retreats, and service. “There’s no place like Carroll. The level of support, unique opportunities, and uplifting community that you find here are impossible to match. Everyone here is rooting for you. They don’t just hope you reach your goals, but they actively step up to support you however they can.” 😇

For Andrew Denegar ’25, a double major in Data Science and Finance, Carroll College provided the academic foundation, hands-on experience and meaningful connections to launch his career. 😇 After graduating, Andrew completed a 10-month internship at the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii, where he applied his data science skills to real-world research. The opportunity was made possible through the generosity of the Simperman family, which sponsors a Carroll student or recent graduate to intern at the observatory each year. 🔭 Today, Andrew works as an Operations Associate in Dividends and Reorg at D.A. Davidson in Great Falls, Montana. Along the way, he credits Carroll faculty and the Data Science department for helping him develop the skills and connections that continue to make an impact. “Carroll College has given me a deeper connection to Montana and relationships that have lasted beyond my time in Helena.” Andrew’s story is a great example of how a Carroll education can open doors, connect classroom learning to real-world opportunities and build relationships that last long after graduation. 🔬 What can Montana’s colorful snow reveal about the hidden ecosystems within it? Carroll College Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Ashley Beck and her student researchers are uncovering the microscopic worlds within snow algae blooms, exploring how algae, bacteria, fungi, and other organisms coexist, compete, and cooperate. 🧫 Supported by a National Science Foundation grant, their research combines fieldwork in places like Glacier National Park with cutting-edge DNA analysis in Carroll’s labs, giving students hands-on opportunities to contribute to scientific discovery. The goal? Build a more complete picture of life within Montana’s snowfields and better understand what drives snow algae blooms, potentially helping scientists predict where and when they will occur. With results expected in 2028, this research is expanding our understanding of these fascinating ecosystems and demonstrating the impact of student-faculty collaboration at Carroll College. When Weslee Nehl ’21 chose Carroll, she knew she wanted a career working with animals. Her Anthrozoology education gave her the hands-on experience and foundation to turn that passion into a career. Today, Weslee serves as an Animal Ambassador Supervisor at a nonprofit zoo and wildlife rehabilitation center, where she oversees more than 70 permanent resident animals and educates the public about wildlife conservation. One of the experiences that helped shape her career? Training shelter dogs during her junior year at Carroll. “The animal training I learned at Carroll was the ideal starting point for everything I do now,” Weslee said. “Since graduating, I've trained grizzly bears, bobcats, bald eagles, owls, crows, and many other species.” And then there were the bats. 🦇 A connection with Carroll biology professor Brandon Schaefer led Weslee to an opportunity caring for live fruit bats at ExplorationWorks. She quickly fell in love with them, turning an unexpected opportunity into one of her favorite animals and favorite topics to teach others about. From hands-on learning and close faculty relationships to discovering an unexpected passion, Weslee's Carroll experience continues to shape the work she does every day. "Carroll is small, but mighty," she said. "Because of the small campus and class sizes, you truly get to know your professors. That makes it easier to ask questions, seek support, and build meaningful relationships. The campus is beautiful, the community is welcoming, and it's an incredible place to grow, especially if you're looking for a supportive environment."
