The 00s, dude, they were absolutely feral (very derogatory)
Two women testified that Russell Brand had dragged or attempted to drag them into toilets. Here he is joking about dragging women into toilet cubicles.

Oh boy. But, probably
Upper-middle class urbanites seeing that ‘Corruption’ was a major issue in exit polls: “Wow, the voters are really sick of Jared Kushner’s back-channel negotiations with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman!” The actual voters: “Trump and Epstein killed and ate JonBenét Ramsey”

AI bros talking about AI before yesterday’s election vs after yesterday’s election
The differing perceptions of AI are wild. The country just voted against data centers on 40+ provisions nationwide and hates AI. (Plenty of legitimate gripes.) But most of those people are just unaware that AI is finding a new cancer cure or treatment weekly, going through decades of peer reviewed data and uncovering mountains of errors, that its correcting, throughout every academic field. Replacing billions of man hours of drudgery. Closest thing to a “miracle” I’ve ever witnessed. When I talk to people outside of tech/VC, they’re just unaware of all of it.

But I have to say that I also feel there are so many headless chickens in corporate leadership. It goes for all of us, of course, there is a lot of uncertainty rn, but the pressure on leadership is to "pick a direction" just to seem decisive
The disconnect between public perception and corporate America on Ai is stark. I’ve never seen such a strong consensus of optimism from businesses about a single technology. Their top priority right now is investing and implementing ai in their business to improve productivity and growth

... taking time, maybe holding to your values - these things tend to get seen as "left behind" or stagnation. I don't think being decisive without values or reasoning behind it is a particularly positive quality. I think there's a quite cult-like quality to the pro-AI crowd rn

People, en masse, tend to be fairly conservative, in the sense of not liking change - it's not necessarily bad. Any change has to prove its benefits, and AI has a long, long way to go to persuade the average member of the public of that

Spot on. It is like dogshit and if we we saw it like that a bit more I think we would start being bolder about it… (had so much noise pollution on train home I wanted to cry)
Rail passengers watching noisy reels, playing music or talking loudly on their phones is the kind of thing that gives people a sense of the enshittification of everything. It's like litter, leaving dogshit or shoplifting, so easy to stop , with penalties and enforcement. It's all a choice.

Burnham says legislation will be introduced as soon as possible but urges employers to publish salaries now rather than wait for the law Further details on the required information and enforcement are yet to be confirmed It's estimated that only 41% of employers always publish salary ranges while just 18% publish exact salaries
71
This is really something!
🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham has announced employers will be legally required to publish salaries on job adverts "You should know what a job pays before spending your time and effort applying for it"

There's been an attrition on publishing salaries, to the point where we're expected to apply for jobs purely based on vibes. Wastes less time on both ends by matching employee to salary bands. Better for everyone.

Rewatching Girls at the moment - it is still so fresh and funny, but it is also indicative of a more hopeful time. Feeling nostalgic and a bit melancholy about it

We can't see the final injunction, but we can see an interim injunction. It is *insane*. Berki was forbidden from telling *anyone*. The only exceptions: Thames Valley Police (to challenge its decision), and lawyers (if involved in the proceedings). Not even friends or family.

Sensible, really. Those bikes are weighty!
🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham has announced plans to fine people who ride e-bikes on pavements, jump red lights or ride while drunk Lime and other firms would also need insurance to compensate people who get hit as well as designated parking spots

I think it's saying that anyone can be the bad guy. Even if you're trying to catch the bad guy, if you take it too far, or compromise morally, you become the bad guy. It's saying: there are no comfortable lines to draw and stay safely on one side of, the landscape always changes
I agree that Primetime does ask you, the viewer, to sort of “thread the needle” a bit on what it’s trying to say but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. The impressionistic portrait of 2000s mass media feels like the point. How effective that is is debatable but I think it works

So, it doesn't really matter whether it's an accurate portrayal of events, because there's truth in the fiction. Though, perhaps it matters quite a lot to the people involved, so the director compromises himself, too
