This is how warped crypto gaming has become. Instead of realising people are leaving because our games aren’t as good or sustainable as traditional ones, we sit here hoping every other game dies so there’s only one watering hole left to drink from. Games are entertainment. The only time that mindset makes sense is if your game is employing people. If one employer shuts down, sure, you find another so you can survive. But we all know how that story ends. Thinking play-to-earn will somehow become sustainable is pure lunacy. And yes, Pixels has done a great job recently showing a positive delta between revenue and rewards, but the real test is time. Games have been sustainable for decades because people value dopamine. Some smoke crack and pay for the crack. Some play games and pay for the games. The problem starts when the crackhead wants you to pay him for the crack you’re giving. Crypto gaming isn’t dying because of competition. It’s dying because when the rewards stop flowing, the games have nothing left that players actually want. Legends of Ymir is doing a lot of things right, and yet barely any gaming founder talks about it. Blows my mind. Illuvium Arena hasn’t reached mass adoption for a few reasons, but the main one is it’s not as good as its main competitor, TFT. The Illuvium MMO has to be better than its competitors, because even if there isn’t a single game left in Web3, I’m not dumb enough to believe that makes my game better.
