Catholic Law’s Professor Alexander Hoffarth: Why “Practice Ready” Is Never Enough bit.ly/3UpZcK7
There are still a few spots left for Catholic Law's Seventh Annual Judicial Clerkship Opinion Writing Conference, taking place in person on campus in Washington, D.C. February 18–20, 2027 - bit.ly/4dxXmgI
This conference is open to individuals who have accepted a 2027–2028 federal clerkship (district court or court of appeals only) or a 2027–2028 state appellate court clerkship. For those preparing to step into chambers, few skills will serve you better than the ability to write a clear, well-reasoned opinion — and this conference provides the focused environment to build exactly that.
What participants can expect:
• Hands-on work in the craft of judicial opinion writing
• Practical insight into the daily demands of a clerkship
• Connections with peers and legal professionals who share your goals
A judicial clerkship is one of the most respected launch points in a legal career. It shapes how you research, reason, and write for years to come. Catholic Law is proud to help law students and emerging lawyers prepare for that opportunity with confidence.
If you've accepted a qualifying clerkship and are ready to sharpen the skills that will define your time in chambers, this is your opportunity. Join us in person on the Catholic University campus this February and invest in your clerkship success.

CIT was honored to host Justice Elena Kagan on Tuesday evening for our annual Conversation with a Supreme Court Justice. In his welcome, Stephen Payne thanked the CIT for its contribution to the ascent of The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law and welcomed Justice Kagan to campus for the first time, remarking that with her visit—the fifth by a sitting justice—Catholic Law now enjoys a “majority” on the Court.
The conversation explored overarching themes of the Justice’s jurisprudence, spanning election law, administrative law, the separation of powers, and religious liberty. Justice Kagan addressed each topic with humor, candor, and a keen focus on how the law impacts the American public.
