Tuesday, October 27 Gospel Reading A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke (Luke 13:18–21) Jesus said, ‘What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it with? It is like a mustard seed which a man took and threw into his garden: it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air sheltered in its branches.’ Another thing he said, ‘What shall I compare the kingdom of God with? It is like the yeast a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour till it was leavened all through.’ The Gospel of the Lord.

St. Otteran, also known as St. Odhran, was an Irish monk and missionary who lived during the sixth century. He is traditionally associated with St. Columba and was among the early companions who travelled with him to Scotland to spread the Christian faith. St. Otteran is especially remembered for his connection with the island of Iona, where he served God through prayer, simplicity, and humble service. Tradition holds that he was among the first monks to die and be buried on Iona, which later became an important centre of Celtic Christianity. His life reflects the quiet holiness of a monk who placed prayer, community, and missionary service above worldly recognition. St. Otteran reminds us that faithful service, even when hidden from the world, can bear lasting spiritual fruit. Prayer: St. Otteran, faithful monk and servant of God, pray for us. Help us to grow in humility, prayer, and love, and teach us to serve Christ faithfully wherever God calls us. May our lives become a witness to the Gospel and a source of blessing to others. Amen.
