This weekend saw the first reunion of my MD class @uni_ulm. I could not attend but was luckily kept in the loop by friends and colleagues. Can’t believe the Audimax is still colored in “poison green”.
Together, these findings indicate that old stem cells lose structural diversity of their proteome and synthesizing #IDPs represents a novel bottleneck during aging. Cyclophilin A can alleviate this stress. #AgingScience #RegenerativeMedicine
Reducing Cyclophilin A accelerates aging in blood stem cells, while overexpression increases the function of aged stem cells. For unknown reasons, Cyclophilin A levels diminish during natural aging. #StemCellAging
We found that one chaperone in particular helps in the translation of #IDPs: Cyclophilin A, which is highly expressed in young blood stem and progenitor cells. For excellent recent studies on this chaperone, see @mz_science. #Chaperone #Proteomics
When stem cells age, they lose the capacity to translate #IDPs, including those involved in liquid-liquid phase separation #LLPS. #IDPs lack defined 3D structures (in isolation) and play important roles in intracellular communication and stress responses. #CellularStressResponse
Protein stress is a hallmark of aging but blood stem cells developed unique ways to reduce it (see @SignerLab). We show that not all protein stress is equal. Synthesizing Intrinsically Disordered Proteins (#IDPs) is especially stressful (see @MatthiasSelbach). #ProteinFolding
So grateful to @pietras_eric, @BeaudinLab, @Silberstein_Lab for putting together a fantastic #G20Summit in beautiful Utah.
Love your understated communication style. Happy Birthday my sweet little daughter!
