What a complete mess. I wish Martin Lewis would butt out of the energy debate. His obsession with the retail side of the market distracts attention from the structural problems caused by domestic energy policy.
Worse, by focusing so much attention on how bills are presented and how costs are distributed between consumers, he is helping to create political incentives to manage the symptoms rather than tackle the underlying causes. Ministers can claim to be helping households while leaving the policies responsible for driving up costs largely untouched.
'The least worst way to do it'

Mindblowing chart from OBR. In 2029 real household disposable income per person expected to be just 1% higher than in 2019. What an unbelievably awful decade. It used to grow by 2%+ every year, not 1% in 10 years.

The thing to remember: don't look at Budgets in isolation.
Taxes have been rising since 2021. The extra tax we're paying this year is the *cumulative* result of five successive Budgets, under three Chancellors.
This chart shows who's responsible & for how much.
Time to turn to crime.
NEW. Additional tax on savings interest (outside of your personal savings allowance and cash ISAs) from April 2027
Basic rate taxpayer: 24% on savings interest and property income
Higher rate taxpayer: 44%
Top rate taxpayer: 49%
So the fact the cash ISA is staying at £20,000 per year is even more important. #Budget2026
10bn for Ukraine. Ok.
🚨 NEW: John Healey has announced Ukraine will receive £10bn in additional economic and military support

🚨 NEW: John Healey is set to announce the following in his Budget later
- The gas standing charge will be scrapped to save £27 a year on a typical bill
- Green levies on energy bills will be scraped "for good"
- NHS prescription charges will be frozen at £9.90 for another year
- Poorer households on benefits will receive extra help with energy bills before January's sharp rises
- The VAT cut on electricity bills, which was due to expire in April, will be extended (though it's not clear if this will be announced in the Budget or separately)
- The Government will remove the link between gas and electricity prices, which currently inflates household bills, "in the long term"
- Banks will face higher taxes, with the surcharge on their profits potentially rising from 3% to 8%, making it the Budget’s biggest revenue raiser
- HMRC will be given powers to seize money from the bank accounts of people who fail to pay their tax
- The freeze on rail fares will reportedly not be extended beyond April
- Online retailers like Amazon, eBay and Temu will be made responsible for collecting unpaid VAT from sellers to fund a cut in business rates for high street shops
- The thresholds for income tax will be frozen again so another half a million people may be dragged into the higher rate
- January's planned increase in fuel duty will be cancelled
- Pensioners relying solely on the state pension will see their tax-free allowance rise to £13,036, in line with the pension increase, so they don't pay income tax
- Billions in long-term borrowing to invest in defence firms and raise the share of GDP spent on defence (without breaking fiscal rules, as the investments are expected to generate returns)
- The upcoming "Your First Home" scheme will be made more generous to provide greater support for middle-income earners
- The Budget will also assume the Rosebank oil field is approved, which will generate "significant tax revenues"

One thing about Arteta, his record in cup competitions is abysmal. Esp given the length of his tenure. Two legged he’s got the chops. But in a one off knockout match or final, much to be desired.

I just watched the Arsenal game (just to watch a game that’s not fucking United or even hear about them for abit) and now I’m at the post match interview. The keeper said “We took inspiration from Grimsby beating Man United”.

I’m not even upset I just feel more numb than anything. Since winning the title this team doesn’t raise my blood pressure anymore. The catharsis of that should get me through another couple of years lol

We humans are going to have to decide whether jobs exist simply to accomplish tasks or if employment as a social technology is worth preserving to maintain social order. Because companies are making decisions with heavy social consequences based on their own economic incentives.
Rumors that chili maker Lao Gan Ma laid off 500+ workers due to AI have gone viral in China.
Beneath Beijing’s positive messaging, many ordinary Chinese people are worried about AI and jobs.
Lao Gan Ma recently touted a new AI-powered chili inspection system that uses high-speed industrial cameras that significantly outperform manual inspection.
A stat about the company using this AI system to reduce human inspectors from 600 to 48 went viral on Chinese social media. The iconic, family-run company pushed back.
But if you look at the data, the company has reduced headcount from 2,912 to 740 in the past few years while earning record revenues.
