My arms are covered in goosebumps & my eyes are streaming with tears of laughter. In this moment I know 2 things…
My old boss in LA, Carl Mazzocone was the producer. He was producing his first film & Kim screwed over the whole production. Carl had 2 films to choose from. He poorly chose Boxing Helena. The film he passed on went to his nemesis Harvey Weinstein. He passed on Reservoir Dogs.
Kim Basinger went bankrupt over a film she never made and a contract she never signed. In 1993 a Los Angeles jury ordered her to pay $8.92 million, more than everything she owned.
In 1989 she was Vicki Vale in Batman. That year a group she led agreed to pay $20 million for most of Braselton, a small Georgia town near where she grew up. In 1991 she rode in with ABC's Chris Wallace and said: "This is peace to me. This is life."
In January 1991 she agreed to star in Boxing Helena, the first film by David Lynch's daughter. A full contract was drafted, and nobody signed it. In June, after her new agency read the script, she pulled out.
The producers sued, saying her spoken yes was a binding deal. In March 1993 the jury agreed. Two months later she filed for bankruptcy. The town her group bought as a dream became an asset in it. Two years earlier, she had called it peace.
In 1994 an appeals court threw out the verdict, and she settled for $3.8 million. The town was later sold for a fraction of the price. In 1998 she won the Oscar for L.A. Confidential.
In numbers.
Independent films borrow against sales made before shooting. Her name was the collateral.
Sales the producers said they lost when she left: more than $6 million.
What the jury ordered her to pay: $8.92 million.
Everything she owned at the time: $5.39 million.
Selling all of it would still leave her $3.53 million short.
The settlement: $3.8 million, about 70% of everything she owned.
The star said yes and never signed. The producers borrowed millions against that yes. The jury ordered her to pay more than she owned.
Side note: Fried Bologna is an all time sensational, childhood sandwich. Just hearing its name has lit a fire in my taste buds. I may have to have one.

On the Lunch portion of
Deep Dive with Kirk Minihane, Kirk mentioned a corn muffin. It sure had been a while.

BREAKING: The raid on Rep. Omar's home might have been the most brilliant political trap in American history, and Democrats are falling right into it. The implications for the November midterm elections cannot be understated.
Journalist Robert Sterling theorized the reasoning behind the order of events and why President Trump chose to take action today in the manner that he did.
"The DOJ likely already had all the evidence needed to indict Ilhan Omar (otherwise, a federal judge wouldn’t have authorized a search warrant this close to an election). If I had to guess, the indictments were ready to file weeks ago," Sterling wrote.
"The raid today was bait to get Democratic candidates on the record supporting Omar. “I stand with Ilhan,” “Ilhan is the best of America,” etc. When the DOJ unveils the indictments in two weeks, every Democrat publicly supporting her today has egg on their face. The trap is sprung right before Americans head to the voting booth," he added.
"This isn’t even 3D chess. It’s checkers-level political strategy, and the Democrats are still marching straight into it. They really are completely oblivious," he concluded.
Sterling's comments came as a reaction to far-left Rep. Tlaib's response to the raid on Omar's home.
"DHS raiding a member of congress's home is exactly what a fascist police state does," Tlaib wrote, panicking.
"This president should not be able to weaponize the federal government against political enemies. I stand with Ilhan," she concluded.
For years, the Democrats mocked President Trump, saying "Nobody is above the law".
It appears now would be a good time for them to keep that same energy.

BREAKING: Actress Selma Blair has been arrested after authorities say she tried to open a plane door midflight before allegedly punching one flight attendant and biting another.
The incident unfolded aboard a Delta flight bound for New York’s JFK Airport. Two flight attendants reported injuries, and one was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Blair’s representative says the actress suffered a medical emergency that triggered the alleged behavior and says she is now in stable condition.
The FBI is investigating as Blair remains hospitalized for evaluation. It is not yet clear whether she will face criminal charges.
