It states that #mangrove cover is expanding in many regions after long‑term net losses, & this recovery is attributed to improved conservation, restoration, & coordinated global action.

To mark #WorldCleanUpDay, our intern made this 🎥⬇️
How do activities done on this day help the #Chagos?
By removing litter from beaches, rivers & streets around the world it stops pollutants like plastic ending up in MPAs, which can threaten wildlife & natural habitats 🌍

Watch this video which highlights evidence behind our ‘Healthy Islands, Healthy Reefs’ project 🏝️🪸
Led by Lancaster Uni’s Dr Laura-Li Jeannot, it reveals how nutrients carried by seabirds nourish coral reefs/what happens when invasive species wipe out seabird colonies 🐦
Contd⬇️
Analysis/research tracks how seabird-derived nutrients move thro’ reef food webs, showing how healthy seabird colonies support larger/more abundant cryptobenthic fish with knock-on benefits for predator fish/fisheries 🐠

To celebrate #WorldSeabirdDay, we thought we’d talk about how BIOT provides a critical habitat for seabird populations. We’ve got over 280,000 pairs of breeding seabirds across the Territory. This includes the red-footed booby, which we have in internationally important numbers - in 2023, 11,700 pairs on Diego Garcia alone. 1/3
“An updated indicator shows 77.5% of assessed endemic species in the UK Overseas Territories are threatened with extinction, highlighting the importance of continued #conservation action”, making the work we do at the #CCT more vital than ever 🏝️

Happy #WorldMantaDay! BIOT provides crucial habitat for an estimated 900 vulnerable reef manta rays, as well as three Critically Endangered species of devil ray. Because of this, our Egmont Atoll was officially designated an internationally Important Shark and Ray Area (ISRA) by the @IUCN in 2024.
