Life before death
No war in US history has killed 1 million Americans, and yet the US spends at least 300 times more on our military defense than we do on our public health defense. That must change, or we'll remain vulnerable to disease threats.

Another great thread by @trvrb - to read entirely if you're interested in science and knowledge, or you can jump to the conclusion here:

mRNA vaccines in particular have the potential to be rapidly updated to respond to viral evolution. We're going to be dealing with an evolving SARS-CoV-2 for the foreseeable future. We should tailor our vaccines accordingly. 14/14

Why "of concern"
Five quick tweets on the new variant B.1.1.529 Caveat first: data here is *very* preliminary, so everything could change. Nonetheless, better safe than sorry. 1) Based on the data we have, this variant is out-competing others *far* faster than Beta and even Delta did 🚩🚩

For anyone who would like a clear summary of where we stand with current vaccines vs. Delta as of Aug. 19
A summary table of the studies that have assessed mRNA vaccine effectiveness (VE) for Delta infections, updated with reports from yesterday, overall in line with estimate ~50-60%; *does not pertain* to high VE for hospitalizations or deaths
