New paper: "The Lynching of Italians and the Rise of Antilynching Politics in the United States" We argue that for decades after the Civil War, the lynching of thousands of Black Americans was met with indifference by White politicians and newspapers... bit.ly/3H6L4sp

I’m thrilled to share that my first academic publication is out @SF_Journal. In this paper, with @GaryAdlerJr, we analyze religious identity and behavior over time to analyze the secularization question in Turkey. 1/n academic.oup.com/sf/advance-…

I’m excited to share American Stories, a new billion-scale dataset of structured texts/layouts from public domain newspapers (1780-1960) that we’ve built using our deep learning packages. #EconTwitter (1/13) Paper: arxiv.org/abs/2308.12477 Dataset: huggingface.co/datasets/dell…

In my dissertation and paper with Sabrina Nardin, I argued that the lynching of Italian migrants in New Orleans was the most covered and politically influential lynching before 1930. I would not have guessed it was also the most covered of ANY event of the year.

The reaction to Russia's invasion of Ukraine is a reminder that cooperative internationalism--support for international institutions and identification as "global citizens"--comes largely in response to geo-political threat...

This however is because most academic work in this area has focused on rich countries which have powerful militaries and where residents may feel they can "go it alone" in response to threats....

It's also counter-intuitive because isolationist rhetoric emphasizes threats from the outside world, but threats to peace and security, as the Russian invasion of Ukraine is illustrating, are where much of the motivation for international institutions and identities comes from.

Just a reminder that Derrick Bell was right. It is often the case that Black life is only affirmed and half-heartedly protected when it is convenient and politically viable for white people in power. That’s history, y’all. Interest convergence is American history.

White northern interests tolerated--and often supported--the lynching of thousands of Black Americans before 1891. By lynching Europeans who had the power of a state and European opinion behind them however, White southern lynch mobs eventually alienated White northern interests.
