Policies are necessary but they must be humane. Proud to co-author with @CheastyAnderson, a terrific writer. Thanks also to Tatiana Londoño and Jamie Turcios-Villalta.
JUST RELEASED: @CDFTexas's @CheastyAnderson and @TexasSteveHicks's Dean Luis Zayas have co-authored a powerful report on the mental health impacts of family detention and the community alternatives that should replace the inhumane policy. Learn more: cdftexas.org/policy/media/20…

Whoa. This is a first to my knowledge—the property owners of detention center (who lease it to a private prison company) suing to terminate the lease. Big developments for ICE detention in NJ going on right now. Feels like a dam has finally burst.
Breaking: Yet another ICE detention facility may close in NJ. Today the owners of the former warehouse where @CoreCivic operates ICE's Elizabeth Detention Center sued CoreCivic to get out of the lease, alleging CoreCivic endangered detainees' lives by violating Covid rules. 1/

This is a great article showing that while the state of Texas is apparently abandoning any role in the safe processing of asylum seekers, local communities are stepping up. Per @RepEscobar: "Plans are in place for each migrant to be tested and quarantined if they test positive."

There are literally no caravans. The last one to leave Honduras in early January was broken up in Guatemala 2,000 miles from the US border and before Biden even took office. Since then, there haven't been any. But of course facts aren't the point. Xenophobic fearmongering is.
A return to caravan fearmongering from Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA): “There are super-spreader caravans coming across our southern border ... The Biden administration's agenda is to open America's borders and close America's schools."

🚨BREAKING: Today, the Biden administration agreed to end all SCOTUS appeals of the previous administration’s #PublicCharge ‘wealth test’, which targeted low-income immigrants and their families. This paves the way for ending this dangerous & racist rule. 🧵A thread 1/

If we go back to the Obama years, the number of families arriving at the border is completely precedented. In other words, there is not a strong signal of a 2019 level spike in the arrivals of families and children. What is there a spike of? Single adults, thanks to Title 42.

As you honor my father today, please honor my mother, as well. She was the architect of the King Legacy and founder of @TheKingCenter, which she founded less than three months after Daddy died. Without #CorettaScottKing, there would be no #MLKDay. #MLK  #BelovedCommunity

The death penalty is fundamentally a poor person’s issue. Over nearly 40 years of visiting death row facilities across the United States, I have never met a single person with money or resources. Capital punishment means “those without the capital get the punishment.”

NEW — At least 701 migrant children have crossed the US border alone after their families were required to wait in Mexico under the Trump admin's MPP policy. Lawyers say these children are being denied safeguards Congress created for unaccompanied minors. cbsnews.com/news/children-wh…

For those not familiar with the issue, due to green card backlogs, children who are derivatives on their parents' nonimmigrant visas (e.g. H-1B) can be forced to leave the United States when they turn 21 unless they find another status—even if they grew up here.
Completely agree with this. Legal dreamers who grow up here in temporary statuses should not be forced to leave any more than those eligible for DACA
