The arguments against the foie gras ban:
1. We only torture them for 3 weeks
2. Other things are also torture
3. People should be able to choose torture
4. Sometimes itās made w/ 1/2 the torture
5. Is this enough torture to care about?
6. Other bad things happen
7. The children!
Calling camping on sidewalks anti-social & acting like this isnāt a rich manās take as a developer and gentrifier.
He wants them ātaken care ofā¦in mental institutionsā while espousing the Reagan era language that took away all support. We fail an increasing number of people.
If you truly *love* American cities, you MUST support strict enforcement of laws against anti-social behavior. Paying bus fares, red light cameras, camping on sidewalks, smoking on trains, off-leash dogs, etc etc
If people want to do whatever they want, thatās FINE in the suburbs or the country on your own land. But it, fundamentally, cannot work in our densest places where people all have to co-operate in proximity.
If we do not, it means cities will continue to be primarily for those able to avoid the annoyances ... the wealthy and/or child-free.
20 countries, 1 US state and 4 US cities ban Foie Gras.
DC can and should be next. Many should follow.

Pay no attention dear readers, to the extreme āveganistsā like Suzannah. This isnāt about ducks or geese. This is about gaining a foothold to controlling your diet for their twisted worldview and vanity by targeting a misunderstood luxury boutique item. First this thenā¦
For those who act like this is all a clever ruse to create a basis for banning all meat or animal farming see the below ālimiting principleā. While some may want slaughter abolished it needs to be possible in a civilized society to see distinction between slaughter & torture.

I see a fundamental distinction between torture & killing. For those who view meat as essential, killing is unavoidable. However, torture is actually never required & thus is avoidable. Ergo we should seek animal farming methods without torture as much as possible.
I propose a spectrum where:
10- abject torture of animals (sadism)
9- abject torture of animals for pleasure with small marginal utility (eg foie gras and veal)
8- extreme conventional industrial farming
7- industrial farming systems
6- welfare enhanced welfare systems

Food and Politics that many people donāt have the privilege to ignore:
1. SNAP
2. Nutrition Panels, Allergens and Ingredients
3. School Lunch Program
4. Restaurant food safety ratings
5. TARIFFS
6. RECALLS and TRACEABILITY
7. Food deserts and swamps
8. Farm subsidies
People donāt want their food or their restaurants to be politicized. The vast majority of people do NOT mix politics and food.
DC has been through this before. I-77 was a solution in search of a problem. The pandemic broke the local industry to the point that folks gave up when I-82 came around. And now we are in a situation where neighborhood restaurants are closing regularly.
These outside voices donāt represent the priorities of DC. And they donāt care about our city.
Iām going to now add the following specious at best arguments:
8. Itās Francophobia or bigotry to ban it
9. Fight me, bro.
10. Itās tasty tho
11. It isnāt torture; trust me bro.

exactly why veganism is intersectional. the current food system is simply inequitable. we manage to feed 80+billion land animals yearly while 600+million humans face chronic hunger. if you are left-wing, you should be a part of a movement pushing for systemic food justice.

Jordan isn't a lawyer and evidently cannot parse legal text. His stated concern about overbreadth -- that this initiative would ban the sale of basically all fowl in DC -- is misplaced and downstream of his professional limitations.
This is the most honest take- people simply donāt want to be told what they can and canāt eat. Food somehow occupies a different part of our minds when it comes to right and wrong, and importantly who decides. Somehow, sadly, this includes torture and force laborā¦
If you grow up in DC you say ON. If you first learn about DC on tv or associate it mostly with our nationās capital then you say In except when referring to the govt. but the neighborhood is a hill not just that big old building.
