Military veterans have uncovered many elements of Iron Age chariots on a recent field project. Richard Osgood is raising funds to enable them to build an experimental version at Butser Ancient Farm in spring 2027. Please give whatever you can. gofundme.com/f/build-a-chari…

Across the country, there's a crisis facing many museums: they are running close to capacity and, in some cases, have already reached it. Gloucester is no exception. So how is the Museum of Gloucester tackling its storage problem..? We've been working with them over the past 𝟯 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀, with the help of 𝟰𝟬 𝗱𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀 contributing more than 𝟮,𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 of their time (well done, team! 👏), to reduce 𝟭,𝟮𝟬𝟬 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘅𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝟱𝟬%! Our Archives team ensured collections were carefully reviewed, catalogued, and repacked. It's a time-consuming process – literally working one box at a time – but it's helping to ensure the future of Gloucester's archive. And we haven't just increased valuable storage space – an inventory of the artefacts has brought previously overlooked finds back into the spotlight, including 41 Roman stamped tiles that didn't feature in the site's publication. 📦Want to find out how it was done and discover some of the finds we've unboxed? The hippodrome (circus) at Caesarea Maritima was the venue for the Actian Games held every four years in honour of emperor Augustus. The games included horse- and chariot-races, athletics, gladiatorial combats, and wild beast hunts. Photo is my own. #RomanSiteSaturday

This morning Go North West took over bus operations on the Wirral so I had a quick ride to see how they are. They’re decent, I’ll miss the mixed fleet of Stagecoach which added a bit of excitement for what would be allocated, but these get the job done and have nice seats. 👍

The milestone outside the museum at #Vindolanda fort south of #HadriansWall still stands by the line of the Stanegate roman road since it was placed here 1900 years ago. No inscription remains so it’s possible the information was painted on #Archaeology #RomanRoad

#RomanSiteSaturday - The monumental eastern entrance to Roman Philippopolis (modern Plovdiv), Bulgaria. A broad paved street led from the gate into the city, lined with Corinthian colonnades and shops. The gate incorporated an earlier honorary arch from Hadrian's reign, likely erected to mark the emperor's visit to the city. When the lower city was fortified under Marcus Aurelius (reign 161-180 CE), the arch was incorporated into the new defences. In the 4th century AD, a monumental eastern gate was built on the same site, opening onto the road to Byzantium. Read more in my new article for @whencyclopedia: worldhistory.org/article/300…
