Just posted manuscript and code for Trellis, an autoformalization system that aims to take a math paper in LaTeX and output a complete formalization in Lean. Link has manuscript, code, and viewers with formalizations of recent Ramsey theory breakthroughs. math.cmu.edu/~wes/trellis.ph…

A 🧵 on some of my intuitions/priors about the genetics of complex and molecular traits in humans (i.e. what I think of as typical), largely motivated by GWAS/QTL studies over the past decade [citing papers with nice figures where possible]

New preprint with @ChikinaLab: "The paradoxical nature of easily improvable evidence" When trying to reason about available evidence which is filtered through the lens of publication bias, what you *don't* see can be as informative as what you do see. 1/2 arxiv.org/abs/2205.14016

This thread on a recent paper from @ProfEmilyOster and others is making the rounds. It is an extremely critical thread employing strong language, questioning the basic judgement and statistical understanding of the authors. A quick, polite thread with some comments on this.1/12
Is 6' of space required to keep kids safe in schools, or is 3' enough? One of the most important questions for re-opening schools safely. Thread tl;dr New paper suggests 3' is enough, but paper is fraught with issues & is unconvincing, even though I really wanted it to be right.

Happy to announce our recent paper with @ChikinaLab, @jcmattingly, and Alan Frieze on new Markov chain significance tests in the context of redistricting problems. It includes examples from the 2019 Common Cause v. Lewis case in North Carolina. tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.…

Alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) is a chemical used by the cell to make amino acids, energy & reverse the "DNA methylation" clock. Feeding 18-month old female mice AKG reduced hair greying, frailty & extended median lifespan 10-16% 💪 Worked less well on boys 😒 tinyurl.com/y6qpyrtu

Is there a seasonal component to the COVID-19 mortality rate? A thread with some figures with @ChikinaLab on what seems to be a question of underestimated importance. 🧵 1/8 Slightly longer version here: math.cmu.edu/~wes/aus.html

Not enough effort is being spent on understanding whether seasonality has a meaningful effect on the fatality rate of COVID (separate from any effect on transmission).

I am glad to finally share this huge effort by @nude_mole_rat and the culmination of a great collaboration with @psalmotoxin that started nearly 6 years ago as a cool idea for a side project ..... nature.com/articles/s41586-0…

Masks are such an important tool in the COVID fight that extra care must be taken to not create conditions which legitimize backlash against mask mandates with executive orders that err on the side of restriction. The previous order already required masks in most settings.

The new stricter mask order just issued by @GovernorTomWolf and @SecretaryLevine is being interpreted by childcare centers to mean that 2-year olds must wear masks. Many 2 year olds are still learning to talk. All will need to have their masks constantly adjusted by caregivers.

Good thread by @mlipsitch on the effect of heterogeneity on the herd immunity threshold. It is reasonable to expect herd immunity to be reached at lower infection levels than naive models suggest, and quite possibly at much lower levels.

After I raised concerns Friday about the mistake of ignoring heterogeneity when considering herd immunity, @CT_Bergstrom offered a response. My reply is in the thread below. Basically: the more complex model he gives models locality but not heterogeneity. xitter.cf/WesPegden/status/12569…
Thanks for the replying, we need this conversation!! A lot of cool ideas in your model. Great work. But I don't think you model heterogeneity in the two relevant ways (more connected=more transmission, and younger=less risk). Even simple models show heterogeneity matters a lot
