AI has a benchmark problem.
At @RezolveAi we tested the same graph retrieval approach on two major eCommerce datasets.
One said it barely worked.
The other showed it beating every baseline we tested.
Same technology. Opposite verdict.
Why?
Because benchmarks aren’t neutral.
If your dataset doesn’t contain the richness a technique exploits or scores “not judged” as “wrong” it can systematically punish better retrieval.
The lesson goes far beyond search:
Before concluding an AI system doesn’t work, make sure your benchmark is capable of recognising when it does.
Sometimes the technology isn’t broken. The test is.
