What do Ryegrass, Brome, IH Mustard, SF Turnip, Wild Radish, NL Tares, BL Tares, Milk Thistle, Snail Medic & Burr Medic have in common?
They’re all bagged up, ready to get sent to @PBoutsalis & the team at PSC, ready for resistance testing.
It’s been a big season for weeds! 🙄

Exciting to see some of my PhD research featured in @theGRDC GroundCover! 🌱
I’m exploring non-chemical weed control technologies, with early trials showing high efficacy of abrasive grit against key Australian weeds. Plenty more to come!
@UWAresearch @DPIRDbroadacre @AHRI_Team
GRDC-supported research is testing non-chemical weed control options including abrasive grit, electricity and targeted tillage.
@uwanews trials found abrasive grit achieved up to 100% mortality in wild radish and fleabane at early growth stages, while annual ryegrass required longer exposure.
Work involving @DPIRDbroadacre and @CharlesSturtUni is also testing electric and mechanical options as part of efforts to reduce reliance on herbicides and extend chemistry longevity

'Sand blasting' weeds using abrasive grit for 1 sec or less achieved 100% mortality of wild radish & fleabane #weeds. Ryegrass needed 3 secs. @Miranda_Slaven @IOA_UWA @GRDCWest

At $20-$40/ha to control native budworm only a few larvae can be above threshold, esp. for pulses:
🌱 Chickpeas: 1-2
🌱 Lentils & Faba: 1
🌱 Lupins: 8-16
🌱 Canola: 4-8
BW counts / 10 sweeps. Low = $20/ha control, High = $40/ha. Grain prices as below @DPIRDbroadacre #PestFactsWA

We've explored how weeds compete—but can we select cultivars to compete with each paddock's unique weed profile? PhD researcher Aung Sing will rank wheat cultivars from Western Australia to pinpoint plant architecture traits that best suppress weeds. #WeedScience #Agriculture

Excited to be working with the FBG this year!
We are testing the productivity and profitability of canola-legume mixes within cropping rotations, and with the help of Billy, anthesis biomass sampling is now done 🐶🌾
Looking forward to the field day next week!

Pea oat forage blends. Been playing last 4-5 years. We have the agronomy right now. Your sweet spot on sowing rates is 80kg peas and 30kg oats. Only starter N with compound (10-12 units). Diuron 1L/ha. One fungicide. Sow on clean paddock to keep clean hay, gly or para.
