“In the work of [Mathias Énard], one comes to expect certain things: historical details, geopolitical thinking, elevated, sometimes baroque prose, intoxicants, violence, voluptuous solitude, troubled personal affairs, and a manifold sensuality.”

What a delight to see Alina's prompt, just as I began to think of my next project! For me, the avant-garde can be so demonstrably revolutionary, that we cannot easily recall what was previously standard. My personal canon inspires me with revolutions in tone, style, and form.
William Gass' "permanent avant-garde" included the Beckett, Gertrude Stein, Henry James, Kafka, Joyce. Who would you add? Or who is on your avant-garde canon?

An excellent piece that gets it right from the first sentence: “Reading Mathias Énard, one doesn’t sense any anxiety about the fate of the novel.” @Chris_Byrd on Énard in @nybooks
