I am proud to celebrate Brandon Brown, a young Jamaican who has taken our skills and talent to the world stage! Brandon, a trainee at the HEART/NSTA Trust’s National Tool and Engineering Institute, has won gold in Optoelectronic Technology at the WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai, China. Optoelectronic technology involves using electrical systems to create, control and work with light, including technologies such as LED displays and other electronic systems. At the competition, Brandon built and programmed LED displays. His achievement makes him Jamaica’s first medalist at the competition and the first from the Caribbean to win a medal. I congratulate Brandon, his family, his trainers and the HEART/NSTA Trust. I also salute the entire Team Jamaica delegation for carrying our flag with pride. Brandon has shown that Jamaican talent belongs on the world stage, and I hope his achievement will inspire many more young Jamaicans to pursue skills, technology and the opportunities that come with them.

Your TV might be one of 216,000,000 LG smart TVs sold worldwide. Researchers rooted one and pulled plain text transcripts of what people said in the room. It kept recording while the screen looked off. If your TV can do that, it’s time to look at everything else on your desk👇🏻

I left Google DeepMind in June. Jacob is right: many researchers believe they are building something that could kill everyone on the planet. It was literally my day job to think about how to stop that.

The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt. If anything, many executives and senior researchers will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible - but I hear the same people express fear privately. No other human activity poses this level of danger.

I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.

There's a total solar eclipse occurring today, visible in a number of locations, so it's a good day to look back to April 20th, 2023, when an eclipse was visible in Western Australia, and eight lucky Pink Floyd fans were able to witness it, accompanied by a purpose built pyramid and the playback of The Dark Side Of The Moon, perfectly timed to conclude as totality occurred. Here's a documentary about the event: youtube.com/watch?v=xUCRDy-N…

We made a short visual explainer to help people understand the Coldcard bug, and what it means for the security of affected wallets. Bitcoin's entire security model depends on a user's ability to select astronomically large numbers from a truly random set. If you imagine every possible Bitcoin private key as individual atoms, when a private key is generated properly, the pool of possibilities is so large that it's like an attacker is hunting for one specific atom hidden somewhere across 2 billion galaxies. No classical computer could ever search that many possibilities. Unfortunately, affected Coldcard firmware drew its seeds from a much smaller, more predictable pool. If every possible Coldcard private key was an atom, the possible set of keys would only be about the size of a large virus. In comparison, a standard computer could work through that space in just a few hours. Our video helps visualize what this difference looks like, we hope this is helpful for everyone to establish the importance of true entropy in key generation. We are deeply sorry for anyone who lost funds to this bug. We know several people that were personally affected, including members of the BPI team. Losing funds after working hard protect your wealth is extremely difficult. We are developing a set of policy reflections based on this vulnerability that we hope to publish as soon as possible.

We see our home planet as a whole, lit up in spectacular blues and browns. A green aurora even lights up the atmosphere. That's us, together, watching as our astronauts make their journey to the Moon.

LOL. I wonder if they're really using Windows 11 up there? Are they seeing ads in their start menu? I wonder if they had to uninstall Xbox live and the plethora of other bundled bloatware? Have they found that they can't seem to disable Copilot even with registry edits?
Yes... In case anyone was wondering, Microsoft still sucks in space.
