The crash of Swissair Flight 111 on September 2, 1998, fundamentally taught the aviation industry the critical importance of landing immediately when an in-flight fire cannot be extinguished.
If a cabin or cargo fire cannot be extinguished within the first TWO MINUTES from its start time, you WILL NOT BE ABLE TO EXTINGUISH IT.
Even if smoke disappears after fire suppression, that doesn't mean the fire is out.
If it has not or cannot be visibly verified that the fire has been put out, immediately land at the nearest airport at which a safe landing can be made.
Hence the common saying: “Land now, troubleshoot later.”
That is why, in case of fire or smoke onboard, pilots immediately divert to the nearest airport.

Underrated Boeing 777 feature: the beige cockpit.
That warm brown/beige interior wasn’t just an aesthetic choice. It was designed with pilot feedback in mind, aiming to create a comfortable working environment and reduce visual fatigue.
The really impressive part: the 777 entered service in 1995 with an advanced glass cockpit built around LCD displays, at a time when CRT screens were still common in airliner cockpits.
Boeing was seriously ahead of its time with the 777.
