The author does a great job bringing the East Tennessee mountains to life, you can almost feel the cold air and the quiet around him, which makes his choice to live alone feel believable rather than romanticized. The book treats Nick less like a legend and more like a person worn down by loss and disappointment. Small moments, especially his relationship with the stray dog, give the story heart and keep it grounded. As a reflective story about solitude and resilience, it works well. It's an easy, thoughtful read, especially if you enjoy regional history and true stories centered around interesting characters.
