Today is the feast of St. John Henry Newman (1801–1890). Although he wasn’t a scientist, he was a towering Catholic mind who influenced the sciences. He engaged constructively with early evolutionist ideas. In an 1874 letter, he said: “I see nothing in the theory of evolution inconsistent with an Almighty Creator and Protector.” He also corresponded with the Catholic evolutionist St. George Jackson Mivart. Newman inspired scientists to enter the Catholic Church. The mathematician Morgan Crofton was received into the Church by Newman in 1851. Newman corresponded with the chemist Emily Fortey and helped guide her to the Church. St. John Henry Newman, pray for us!
