Rand Water crisis affecting Tshwane consumers Here is what we’ve been able to verify about the water outages in the east and the Moot areas of Pretoria. I stress that I am not the Mayor, but the Mayor isn’t communicating. Neither is the City. On Sunday, a major inlet pipe burst at Garsfontein Reservoir. This is where the City receives about 40% of its water from Rand Water for onward distribution. The damage was only fully repaired on Tuesday. As a result, the reservoir that supplies many of the others in the City is empty. Importantly, this is not due to overuse by consumers. There’s another problem, this time on Rand Water’s side. Vlakfontein 2 has also been taken out of service this week. According to our DA spokesperson in Ekurhuleni, this is for maintenance and descaling. Rand Water has failed to explain this publicly. As a result, water is also not flowing into Garsfontein and onward to other Tshwane reservoirs. Instead, Rand Water’s communications refer to restricting supply to Klapperkop and Garsfontein without giving residents the full picture of what has happened upstream. Garsfontein Reservoir supplies several downstream reservoirs, including Elarduspark, Lynnwood, Jan Niemand Park, East Lynne, Eersterust and Murrayfield. Disruptions to its supply therefore have consequences across a large part of Tshwane. DA councillors have asked the City for two things: 1. Clear communication and mitigation plans to stabilise the system. 2. A published schedule of water tankers in the affected areas.

I believe that Tshwane mayor Nasiphi Moya, who should have resigned by now over the Bronkhorstspruit water contamination, is misleading the public over similar water contamination in the Pretoria CBD. Her MMC for Health suggested they also ran out of chlorine at the Fountains purification plant. The mayor says sewage leaked into the water supply. In the meantime ActionSA’s army of paid keyboard warriors are telling Tshwane residents how grateful they should be for having her as mayor. It is time to end the chaos.
