We passed an interesting milestone this week on New Horizons. As of this week, the spacecraft is farther from Pluto than it was at launch! How cool is that? :-) #Space #Science #NASA

Confirming Nunki as the closest core collapse progenitor candidate to the Sun: arxiv.org/abs/2603.17011 -> it's a pair of 6 M_Sun stars at 69 parsec that will merge into a 10 M_Sun star and thus end as a supernova.

Confirming Nunki as the closest core collapse progenitor candidate...

We have recently suggested that Nunki=Sigma Sagittarii is the closest core collapse progenitor candidate to the Sun based on a VLTI/GRAVITY observation that unveiled it as a $6.5+6.3 M_{\odot}$...

Today it took Michael JΓ€ger and Gerald Rhemann a 12-inch telescope and 27 minutes to show comet C/2025 R3 (PANSTARRS) this nicely: facebook.com/photo/?fbid=238… - but if it stays the course it could be quite impressive for much smaller gear as well as the human eye a month from now.

A massive cosmic ring may challenge a key assumption about the universe

At 3.3 billion light-years across, the ring may challenge the β€œcosmological principle” that the universe looks uniform at sufficiently large scales.

After an initial period of relative social shock, regressive historical anomalies unfortunately become normalized and end up contributing to the gradual deteriorating of societal constructs, interpersonal norms, and in most extreme cases, the collapse of civilizations.

Illustration of a planet orbiting a star, with the words β€œArtist’s Concept” in the lower left corner. About one-quarter of the star is visible in the upper left corner; most of the star is out of the frame. The star has a Sun-like appearance: yellowy orange with darker orange mottling and an orange glow. The planet is toward the lower right. The left half of the visible hemisphere is lit by the star; the right half is in darkness. The lit side of the planet has the bright whitish fuzzy glow of an atmosphere. The surface of the planet seems to glow with swaths and patches of bright orange as though part of the planet is molten. The boundary between the lit and dark side of the planet is fuzzy. The background is black with some faint background stars and hints of other planets.
