Thrilled to share that our work on LLM byteification is out in @Nature today! 🎉
Byteification lets existing LLMs gain the strengths of byte-level models without training from scratch.
Huge kudos to lead author @bminixhofer, who did most of this in a three-month internship! 🤯
Our paper on retrofitting language models to operate over bytes – the approach behind Bolmo – has been accepted to Nature! 🎉
We’re also releasing new checkpoints that extend our method from Olmo to Qwen & Llama. 🧵

If you're at #ICML2026 🇰🇷 next week, don't miss our latest work on remedying retriever blind spots! 🔎
@zeinabTaghavi is presenting our paper at the conference. I unfortunately won't be there to join, but you should definitely go check out the poster, and chat with her! 👇 [1/3]

📢 We're hiring a PhD student in tokenizer-free foundation models!
The position will have a double affiliation with @LMU_Muenchen and @utn_nuremberg, co-supervised by @y_m_asano and me.
Come work with us in Munich and Nuremberg!

Check out our new collab with @ZeinabTaghavi, accepted at #ICML2026!🎉
Dense retrievers have blind spots (see: Collapse of Dense Retrievers & ImpliRet; both worth a look 👀). ARGUS detects them from embeddings before indexing and mitigates them with targeted augmentation.
🎉 Excited to share our new paper accepted at ICML 2026!
🔍 Did you know retrievers can have their own blind spots-where certain documents are consistently hard to retrieve?
📉 Retrieval failures are not random; some documents are consistently hard to retrieve.
📊 We introduce RPS to quantify retrievability and show it can be predicted from embeddings before indexing.
🛠️ ARGUS detects these blind spots and mitigates them with targeted augmentation.
📈 We observe consistent gains in retrieval performance (+3.4 nDCG@5, +4.5 nDCG@10 on average).
🤝 Grateful to work with an amazing team: @AModarressi , @HinrichSchuetze , and @amarfurt, at @CisLmu and @hslu.

Couldn't make it to ICLR in person this year, but our work is there! 🎉 Stop by Poster #603 tomorrow if you're around 🙌
Really proud of this collab w. @mohsen_fayyaz : steering MoE model behavior by flipping expert activations at test time.
#ICLR2026
📌 SteerMoE has been accepted to ICLR 2026 and will be presented at Poster #603, Poster Session 2, Pavilion 3, Thu 23 Apr, 3:15–5:45 p.m.
🙏 I’m unable to attend in person, so many thanks to @LucasBandarkar for presenting on our behalf. Stop by if you’re around.

LLMs are used in real-world multilingual settings, where users constantly make typos.
But almost all benchmarks assume perfect, clean input.
👉 So… how robust are LLMs to realistic typos across languages?
We introduce MulTypo, a multilingual typo generation algorithm that simulates human-like typing errors:
• grounded in language-specific keyboard layouts
• models real typing behavior (not random noise)
• validated with human evaluation
→ resulting typos look much closer to what users actually produce
We then evaluate 18 LLMs across various tasks and multiple languages.
**Key findings**:
📉 Even small amounts of typos consistently degrade performance
🧠 Tasks requiring generation and reasoning are especially fragile
⚙️ Instruction tuning improves clean performance -- but can make models more brittle under noise
🌍 Robustness varies across languages:
• high-resource languages are more stable
• translation from English is more robust than into English
💡 Takeaway:
LLMs don’t just struggle with adversarial attacks --
they struggle with everyday human mistakes.
To support the community, we release MulTypo as a Python package:
👉 Easily inject realistic typos into your data
👉 Benchmark robustness under real-world noise
👉 Build and evaluate more reliable multilingual systems
We hope this helps move evaluation beyond clean benchmarks and towards more realistic, user-facing settings 🚀

Audio LLMs improve access, but speech carries identity cues users can't easily mask.
We find these cues create new pathways for AI bias, complicating the fairness gains of accessibility.
Really enjoyed working on this w/ great team led by @CarolinHolterm and @minhducbui_nlp! 👇

For our second topic we move to linguistics and the interpretabilty domain with @HinrichSchuetze from @LMU_Muenchen.
He started with his experience during the dotcom vs the current AI boom and moved on to the Linear Relational Embeddings Hypothesis for creative generalisation of modern LLMs.
