Tocqueville’s paradox: it is in the most equal societies that people find inequalities most intolerable.
Dunning was my professor at @Cornell during my PhD.
This paper answers why confident idiots run the world.
Cornell University published a psychological paper that explains every terrible boss, every loud influencer, and every broken corporate hierarchy.
It’s called “Unskilled and Unaware of It.”
they tested participants across logic, grammar, and humor to measure the gap between actual performance and self-perception.
And the results are wild.
participants scoring in the bottom 12th percentile consistently believed they were operating in the 62nd percentile.
they were not lying. they were literally incapable of recognizing their own incompetence.
the paper revealed a brutal paradox:
the exact skills required to master a domain are the exact same skills required to accurately evaluate your own competence in that domain.
if you lack the skill, you inherently lack the cognitive capacity to realize you are failing.
this creates a dangerous systemic loop.
the incompetent are blessed with absolute, blinding certainty. their brain protects them from their own ignorance, allowing them to speak first, demand authority, and never second-guess their decisions.
meanwhile, the actual experts suffer the exact inverse.
top performers in the study consistently underestimated their rank. because a task was easy for them, they falsely assumed it was easy for everyone else.
they hesitate. they obsess over nuance. they assume they have nothing unique to add.
we are biologically wired to confuse confidence with competence.
the loudest person in the room gets promoted, gets funded, and gets the microphone, not because they know what they are doing, but because they are physically incapable of seeing what they don't.
the only defense mechanism is building systems that stop rewarding absolute certainty and start demanding proof of work.

United States were founded by people who studied Ancient Rome.
George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and other founders read Plutarch and Polybius on daily basis. For a reason Plutarch was the second most sold book in Americas after Bible. The America itself was built on Roman Republican principles, merging different ruling systems: monarchy, aristocracy and democracy.
There is no other country in the world, which has such a strong Roman legacy. That is why America is often compared to Rome.

Venice pioneered serial production of war galleys in Late Middle Ages, building them to standard dimensions in the Arsenal and finishing them from stored parts.
This was the closest thing to mass production of warships before the industrial age!
This image shows different stages of ship production in Venetian Arsenal. It's from 1797 but the layout was inherited from the medieval Arsenal, which had built galleys this way since the 14th century.
From the Arsenale Nuovo of 1320, hulls were built frame-first in repeated covered sheds, kept at different stages of completion, and then moved past magazines of standard masts, oars, rope, sails, anchors, and weapons. The Arsenal kept standardized hulls, masts, oars, and rigging in store so a hull could be launched and fitted for sea in days rather than months.
Venetians used frame-first instead of shell-first method of building. Frame-first construction used less timber, needed less skilled fitting of every plank, and let workers specialize. Specialized squads did the framing planking, caulking, and fitting-out, so a galley could be armed from stored parts rather than built as a one-off.
At the peak of its efficiency in the early 16th century, the Arsenal employed some 16,000 people who apparently were able to produce nearly one ship each day, and could fit out, arm, and provision a newly built galley with standardized parts on a production-line basis not seen again until the Industrial Revolution!
This efficient system of galley production of Venetian Arsenal enabled Venice to equip a large fleet for the Battle of Lepanto in 1571 in time.
There is even an interesting anecdote about the speed at which galleys could be produced in Venice when needed. It is said that when in 1574, King Henry III of France sat down to a banquet in Venice, and a new war galley was fitted out and launched by the time got up from the table.
