ALT Geomorphology can facilitate a better understanding of glacier and ice sheet behaviour in several ways: by moderating glacial response to climate change; by providing rates of glacier change and sensitivity to climate; as information of ice flow properties and basal conditions; and as constraints for ice sheet modelling.
ALT A south polar skua has found a scenic resting place on an otherwise fairly featureless expanse of volcanic pumice and rock.
ALT Colobanthus quitensis (Antarctic pearlwort) in amongst moss. Antarctic pearlwort is only one of two flowering plants in Antarctica.
ALT Bed of a glacial/snow melt water stream. Lots of different types of volcanic rock, from centuries of different eruptions can be seen in the stream bed. The banks show good cross sections of the multiple layers of ash and rock that have been deposited on the beach.
ALT One side of Neptunes Bellows, which is the channel you can sail through to enter the Deception Island caldera, which has been flooded by Antarctic sea water. Volcanic vents under the water heat it up, so you can swim in both sub-zero and near-boiling water at the same time. The whole place in an other-worldly landscape.
