El Salvador, once considered one of the world's most violent countries, has recorded a homicide rate of just 0.97 per 100,000 inhabitants so far in 2026, compared with France's 2025 rate of approximately 1.43.
The dramatic transformation comes under President Nayib Bukele, whose government launched an unprecedented crackdown on the notorious MS-13 and Barrio 18 criminal gangs in March 2022.
In 2015, El Salvador recorded approximately 103 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, nearly 100 times France's rate at the time. By 2024, the Salvadoran government's reported rate had fallen to 1.9, followed by just 1.3 in 2025.
As of October 10, 2026, authorities had registered only 48 homicides nationwide, with 236 days without a reported murder.
Bukele celebrated the latest figures, declaring:
"Even with crime rates already at razor-thin levels, we're still driving them even lower. On track to become the safest country in the world."
More than 90,000 people have been arrested under the country's state of emergency, which has dramatically weakened the gangs.

Viele bürgerliche Journalisten kommen immer wieder mit "AfD muss sich doch auch auf Union zubewegen". Das tun wir doch schon. Dass wir Leuten, die uns vom Geheimdienst verfolgen lassen, die uns in großen Teilen wie Menschen zweiter Klasse behandeln, überhaupt Koalitionsgespräche anbieten, ist großzügiges Entgegenkommen. Das auch nur, weil der Bürger das will und es für Deutschland besser wäre wie Schwarz-Rot. Ob die Union darauf eingeht oder untergeht, ist mir herzlich egal.
