Watching my team play last night without being able to coach was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do.
In a big rivalry game last Friday, two UNI penalties were called on back-to-back plays over players’ knee pads, resulting in my ejection. One player was wearing knee pads, but the official said they were not big enough. I’ve never seen another coach ejected for that, and I didn’t disrespect the official before or after the ejection.
We appealed, and the suspension was reduced from two games to one. The message was still that I needed to be “held accountable.”
I understand my responsibility as head coach, but I believe this punishment was disproportionate. An equipment issue cost me the chance to stand beside my seniors and coach them on Senior Night. That hurts.
Food for thought: The biggest sin in football is thinking you’re bigger than the game itself. No player, coach, or ego is above the team. Respect the game.
Congrats @SamWolfenden4 and Temple for their big win over south Florida
