A weekend reflection after being back coaching U10 and below again, after probably 6 years coaching older ages.
One weekend in and I see how much adults still try to play the game for kids.
“Not to the middle!”
“Don’t dribble there!”
“Receive on your back foot!”
Then...
It’s a beautiful weekend in TX. Perfect weather to sit back and watch my teams play.
Then the games kick off, the constant 🕹️ ‘coaching’ begins & my mood is instantly ruined as I try to drown out the endless noise and instructions.
It’s the beautiful game. Not a video game.
🧵I love coaching U7-U8 girls playing 4v4, but something drives me nuts almost every weekend.
In almost every game I watch, at least one player is learning absolutely nothing.
And the worst part? Coaches and parents often celebrate it.
Any guesses what I’m talking about?
Every child should get the chance to dribble, attack, defend, make decisions and mistakes.
More importantly, every child should actually get the chance to PLAY!
If we’re denying 6 and 7 year-olds these opportunities just to win a game of 4v4, what are we doing?

Training sessions shouldn't consist of repeating solutions. Instead it should involve the process of solving a problem again & again in different & variable ways. Can you perceive the problem and build the ability to create adaptable solutions based on that particular context?
An important message from my favorite player to watch 🐐

I have been around some coaching sessions with Foundation Phase players the last couple of weeks. I’m seeing a big shift away from play/small-sided games to very, adult focused technical practices. While there is nothing wrong with moving across the spectrum, I feel…

At an U12 game last night, the opposition coach was directing almost every decision on the pitch: “Pass now”, “switch it”, “shoot”, “play forward”, “pass here”, “Sent it”.
It wasn’t just the instructions, it was the tone, the urgency and the volume, with his voice dominating the game.
The players I coach came off saying, “That coach is annoying”, “I can’t hear myself think” and “Why are most coaches like that?”
That last question reflects their experience, although it doesn’t describe every coach.
We say we want independent thinkers, decision makers and creative players, yet how much room do we give them to develop those qualities when an adult is constantly telling them what to do?
If we direct every action, we shouldn’t be surprised when players wait for instructions instead of trusting their own decisions.

You spot a problem in your game.
Then you design a training session to fix it...
But the drill doesn't look anything like the situation you're trying to solve.
This is a common problem.
Here's a simple framework that can help:
The 5 W's of Drill Design 🧵
Some great examples so far. Let’s see if @SundayShare10 can help get more!

At the end of practice, the players are scrimmaging and the coach has checked out. That's the problem. The scrimmage isn't a reward. It's the best coaching tool you have. leedunnesoccer.com/soapbox/l…
So many posts this week looking for private training or indoor skills because practice got rained out.
It’s going to be fine, I promise. Save your money.
Your kid can miss a couple of practices. They won’t suddenly become a worse soccer player.
They don’t need…

Any more to add coaches?
If you could only use ONE soccer activity in training for an entire year, what would you choose?
Every session.
Same activity.
You can adjust numbers, space and constraints, but the basic activity has to remain the same.
What…
