We lost a great one yesterday Al Goldis. He was both the scouting director & director of player development for both the White Sox & Cubs. His most notable draft was Frank Thomas. Al was one of one. A baseball savant but also a human savant. He was a champion for the underdog. Somewhere in every conversation he would talk about the need to help someone who was struggling. His moral/ethical compass was unparalleled. For those of you who knew Al, when you are tasked with a difficult decision, it would not be wrong to ask yourself “WWAD.” I consider myself fortunate to have worked for Al as a manager in the NY-PENN League in 1993 & 1994. One note in light of all the strike outs in the most recent playoff series, Al was a huge proponent of making two strike adjustments.
