History for Donohue 🏆 Congratulations to quarterback Chris Donohue, who was named this week’s NEFWA Gold Helmet recipient! Donohue is the first Bulldog since 2021 to win the award, and just the second in school history! #BulldogNation #FEED 🐾

If Kirk Ferentz and the Big Ten coaches are against the new punt rule, then everyone needs to get in line.

Positively absurd take. If this were the case - why are there NO STCs in favor of this rule? Not one I know thinks this should be implemented. While we’re at it, let’s ban shifts / motions on offense and disguising coverages on defense. Those are meant to confuse as well.
There most certainly is a compelling reason. Kicking teams had become extremely creative with formations in order to confuse the receiving team with respect to who may or may not be eligible, i.e., who needed to be covered in case of a fake punt. There was an unfair advantage that is now significantly reduced or eliminated. Fundamental principle of the rules: Start the play fairly for both sides of the ball.

Love it when coaches bring actual data to an argument to strengthen their position of how dumb a new punting formation rule change is by the NCAA. 👇 Here’s your reason why successful ST Units went away from the 2x2 formations.
Replying to @LeVarWoods
A 2025 study of 150 blocked punts found that 80.7% happened out of the same 2x2 formation this proposed rule would require. Another 12.7% came from formations that would become illegal, while just 6.7% were due to poor operation.

Ah yes, the NFL... beacon of rules we all can agree on... This is college STs, what ST position requires a certain number (before this rule)? Just a small amount of film study by a capable STC can spot punt formations with unusual eligibles, its the same rules as an offense.
Apparently, opponents of the rule change want kicking teams to both: use speedier, eligible numbers on punts for better coverage *AND* sometimes use those same players as eligible receivers by putting them on the end of the line, often through deceptive shifts and alignments. The old rule affected the precarious balance between offense and defense on punt plays and placed the defense at a significant disadvantage. It's not surprising that fans don't understand this. It's disturbing that so many coaches don't (or at least don't care). The NFL has understood this for decades and why players must report when playing in a different position than their number requires.

Wildly stupid. Unfair advantage? Ive made an entire career on putting fake punts on tape. It exposes when the opponent just glosses over Punt Ret or STs in general. The rule change penalizes teams who MAKE STs a weapon of action and not just a stopgap between O and D.

We certainly wouldn’t want any creativity now would we? What unfair advantage? The one that requires the defenders to know where the eligible players are & account for them? Perhaps we should require every offensive formation to use 2 backs & 3 TEs so we know who’s eligible.

Really hard knowing these guys won’t be reporting in August. I cannot thank them enough for the impact they made on my life. With that said, they also deserve a home. A chance to be great as I know they can be. Any coaches feel free to reach out, great players and great people
