When did we all start to say 'to gift' instead of 'to give'? She gifted me her seat, I was gifted an extra portion of fish and chips .. even the prime minister is doing it. Is it American? I don't remember it in American books or films either, until recently

I have alot of sympathy for UKRI who have to make hard funding decisions - but whether it's from them, local funds, or philanthropic and commercial efforts Jodrell Bank and The Lovell Telescope simply must be kept both operational and supported as a home for science.
The strategic case is overwhelming: The Lovell Telescope is the third-largest steerable radio dish on Earth, it does space debris & satellite tracking, satellite capability inference and provides defence from GPS-spoofing all of which are now critical defence capabilities as well as significant commercial opportunities for the UK.
And beyond the immediate importance of that work, e-MERLIN gives us reciprocated access to a global research base, astronomy data to power further research and perhaps most importantly continues to inspire over 130,000 visitors & 20,000 schoolchildren a year.
This can't be turned off and back on in a few years if we change our minds on scientific priorities - it's a one way ticket and I am sure there's a path to avoid what would be a huge loss on many fronts.

This is the result of many bad legacy decisions taken by UKRI hastily and without proper consultation, overseen by a government department that no longer exists. Surely the new @andyburnham government will want to take time to review this.
Just received pre-print copies of my forthcoming beetle book, to be published in September. Signed copies of the existing beetle book still available on Ebay: ebay.io/m/sk5QZE

Can you tell which of these four fruit still lifes were made by AI and which were made by a 19th-century painter? At least one was painted by a human, and at least one was made by an AI. Place your guesses in the 4 surveys below:

Social Media is the lifeline I never had, as a solitary-minded child with a niche interest shared by no-one around me (entomology in my case). Now politicians want to snatch that opportunity away from the next generation of children. Story here facebook.com/share/p/1KYtecR…
politicians have decided to try to ban Social Media for young people. They say they encourage STEM, support community, support mental health.. but they try to pull the plug on the engine of growth for niche fields of learning, & throw the next generation of kids back to the 80s.
This is @grok response to my post "Research from the Journal of Science Communication (2022) supports Barclay's view, showing online forums increase STEM persistence among youth with unconventional interests by 40%, countering isolation that often leads to dropout."
