Let me summarise how I, and many other golf fans, feel about this in five points.
1. Players who make a Ryder Cup team generally don’t need a $200k stipend. Plus, the financial benefits of making a team are well-documented and HUGE.
2. Many see the Ryder Cup as pure. It is a contest to represent your nation and carry the hopes of millions as a team. At a time when the weight of money has fractured pro golf, this event should be a chance to bring players together to compete for pride, not have individual brown envelopes slid across the table.
3. Giving more money to charity is fantastic; no one disagrees, but it shouldn’t be used as a lever.
4. As a European, I can only imagine how much motivation this will give our team and the songs it will provide the fans.
5. Combined with ticket prices for this Ryder Cup and the inevitable cost of food/drink, fans feel ripped off. Bethpage should be RAUCOUS, but already things taste a little sour.
