Twenty-five years later, the sacrifice of September 11th, 2001, is still being felt.
On that day, firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, and countless others ran toward unimaginable danger while thousands were trying to escape it. Many gave their lives in the immediate aftermath. Thousands more were exposed to the toxic conditions at Ground Zero and would spend the years that followed battling serious illnesses connected to their service.

Today, the Colorado Fraternal Order of Police remembers the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11th, 2001. We honor the law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, military members, rescue workers, and ordinary Americans who answered the call that day.
We also remember those who survived, but continued to carry the physical and emotional cost of that service long afterward.

Twenty-five years later, the sacrifice of 9/11’s first responders is still being felt.
Thousands of firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, workers, and residents were exposed to toxic air at Ground Zero. Many survived that day, only to face serious health consequences years later.
For the men and women who ran toward the danger, September 11 didn’t end when the towers fell. The impact followed them home.
We remember those who were lost that day. We also remember those who continued to fight long after.
9/11 is part of our history, but for many first responders and their families, it is still a reality.

The Colorado FOP was proud to sponsor a softball team at Saturday’s 16th Annual Donnie Young Softball Tournament.
Donnie was a valued member of CDIA, and this annual tournament honors his memory while supporting an incredibly important cause. All proceeds benefit the CDIA Survivors Benefit Fund, which provides financial assistance to the families of fallen police officers across Colorado.
While our team didn’t bring home the win, we had a great time playing for a great cause! We’re proud to support the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice and to honor Donnie’s legacy.
Thank you to everyone who organized the tournament and to all the teams, sponsors, and supporters who helped make the day a success!

The Colorado Fraternal Order of Police was proud to sponsor a golf foursome at the annual Alexa Bartell Foundation Golf Tournament yesterday. The tournament honors the life and legacy of Alexa Bartell, a bright, loving, and joyful 20-year-old whose life was tragically taken in a senseless act of violence. Though Alexa’s life was cut far too short, the compassion and joy she brought to others continue through the work being done in her name. The Alexa Bartell Foundation carries her legacy forward by supporting causes that were close to her heart, including animal welfare, opportunities for young girls who share her love of basketball, and mental health resources for first responders. We are especially grateful to Kelly Bartell for the strength, determination, and love she has shown in honoring her daughter. Through the Foundation, Kelly and Alexa’s family have turned an unimaginable loss into a lasting effort to help others and ensure Alexa’s memory continues to make a difference. It was an honor to join Alexa’s family, friends, and so many supporters for a day dedicated to remembering her life and supporting the causes she cared about. The Colorado FOP looks forward to continuing our partnership with the Alexa Bartell Foundation and supporting its mission in the years ahead. Alexa’s legacy lives on through every life touched in her name.
Prepared to act when every second mattered.

NEWS RELEASE: Thornton Police investigate bomb threats, suspect in custody
The Thornton Police Department has arrested 28-year-old Lane Moreau in connection with bomb threats called in to @CityofThornton facilities on July 21.
The first call came into the Thornton City Pool, 2141 E. 95th Ave., just before 2 p.m. Six minutes later, a second call came into the Margaret Carpenter Recreation Center, 11151 Colorado Blvd. In both cases, the suspect said he was making a bomb threat.
Officers were dispatched to both locations and helped city staff evacuate patrons as well as set up reunification points. Thornton Police requested mutual aid. Explosives detection K9s from RTD Transit Police, Commerce City Police, Adams County Sheriff's Office, Douglas County Sheriff's Office, and the U.S. Marshals Service responded to assist with the searches. No suspicious items were found, and both scenes were cleared by 5 p.m. Both facilities were closed for the remainder of the day and will resume normal operations Wednesday, July 22.
Detectives quickly identified Moreau as a suspect. Investigators arrived at his residence by 2:30 p.m. and detained him for questioning. He was taken into custody by 6 p.m., just four hours after the first call came in.
Moreau was arrested on two counts of false reporting of explosives and booked into the Adams County Jail.
At this time, investigators do not have any information indicating this incident is connected to the bomb threat received by Water World on July 11. However, detectives are in communication with the Federal Heights Police Department and are looking into the possibility.
"Today's successful outcome reflects the outstanding teamwork between our city staff, dispatchers, patrol officers, detectives, and our law enforcement partners," said Thornton Police Chief Jim Baird. "Everyone responded with professionalism and urgency, and I'm grateful their coordinated efforts brought this incident to a safe and swift resolution.”
Under Colorado law, the arrest and filing of criminal charges are merely formal accusations that an individual committed a crime. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
One of the unique parts of growing up in a law enforcement family is knowing that there is an entire network of people who care about your safety and success.

Law enforcement children grow up understanding sacrifices that many others never have to make.
They know birthdays may be interrupted, holidays may be delayed, and family traditions sometimes have to change because the call to serve comes first.
This July, during Law Enforcement Child Month, we honor the children behind the badge. Their resilience, patience, and strength deserve to be recognized just as much as the service of the officers they love. The Fraternal Order of Police is partnering with the Gratitude Initiative to raise awareness and provide meaningful support for law enforcement families through education and family-centered programs.
