Exciting work from my group! Visit us #CogSci26 - this work show something exciting about human AI collaboration- sometimes it is good for humans and AI to be misaligned!! More on the poster …
🤖🗣️ Will a hybrid society of humans and AI be more creative than either alone? What happens when their cognitive strategies are misaligned, and does that make the collective more intelligent, or does it break down?
🧠 Check out our paper #CogSci26 1/
Join us at Cornell! Our new lab is hiring a lab manager, PhD students, and postdocs with a focus on computational music cognition. Be part of a growing, dynamic research group. Please spread the word, and contact @norijacoby if you are in #ICMPC_SaoPaulo or #CogSci2025.
The @CO3lab at @Cornell is hiring a lab manager.

If you are at #CogSci2024 come to @Eline__VG presenting joint work with @norijacoby using Gibbs Sampling with People to understand visual aesthetics. 10:30 - 12:00 in Perception 3 session.
Excited to attend my first @cogsci_soc this week! If you are into perception, aesthetics, individual differences, context effects, Bayesian, open source programming, and more find me at #CogSci2024! On Saturday (Perception3) I present work I did with @norijacoby at the @MPI_ae ⬇️

“Characterizing Similarities and Divergences in Conversational Tones in Humans and LLMs by Sampling with People” is a collaboration with @dm_brandonH, @polvanrijn, @sucholutsky, @RajaMarjieh, @norijacoby our pre-print is available here:
arxiv.org/abs/2406.04278 n/n
With 1,339 human participants, 33,370 human judgments, and 29,900 GPT queries, we demonstrate how combining ideas from machine learning and cognitive science can address challenges in human-computer interactions. 13/
Finally, we demonstrate how our data can be used to benchmark methods for semantic alignment. We found that Bilingual Lexical Induction surpasses other (geometric) methods, suggesting that it would be appropriate for applications such as machine translation. 12/
We also visualize the map of correspondence between human and GPT descriptors of conversation tone in kNN structures, finding an asymmetric mapping as shown below. High robustness (dark color) indicates strong correspondence. 11/
Using an MDS of human-GPT correlations, we project the conversation tones into a shared embedding space. We found divergences in fundamental dimensions (eg., valence and arousal) and close alignment in other directions. 10/
We also found that there are difference between conversational tones that are highly aligned such as joyful, pleased, and happy, whereas tones like reflective, apologetic and proud are much less aligned. 9/
Using QoF, we calculated the correlation between ratings of sentences for each pair of conversational tones, creating a similarity matrix. We found a close agreement between these results and a separated experiment collecting humans’ similarity judgments. 8/
The second tool is Quality-of-Fit rating (QoF), to rate each sentence on the strength of a selected list of top 40 conversation tones elicited from both humans and LLMs via Sampling with People. 7/
To explore the sentences we sampled using SP, we also use UMAP to compute sentence embeddings. We find that regions of this sentence embedding scatter plot correspond to specific conversational topics and tones, such as the correspondence of (vi) to a more relational tone. 6/
We found that humans and GPT are different in their use of conversational tones. We observed a large difference in the frequency of usage of tones such as excited, grateful, and concerned. 5/
