object level aside, how would you go about effectively banning a subset of dogs? “You know it when you see it” type laws? Increased liability?
This is really great, and from a legal and social perspective the key point in my view is that it really doesn’t matter what individual people think about pitbulls — you can love them or hate them or whatever — the externalities are real and when you let a dog like this out into your yard, or you take it for a walk, or you otherwise take it into public, you are imposing those externalities on your neighbors. They should simply be banned. What is so ridiculous about the status quo is that not only are they perfectly legal to buy, but owners are told exactly the wrong things about these dogs. “It’s not the breed, it’s the owners. They used to be nanny dogs. These dogs are just like any other dogs. All dogs have the potential for violence.” This is all designed in a lab to create owners who don’t take the risks of owning these dogs seriously — they are in active denial, in fact! — and who will not be prepared for it when a traumatic event occurs.
