In 1968, a small group of Irish people saw suffering and famine in Biafra, and they didn’t wait for the world to act. Our community has grown, but our mission remains the same - because ending extreme poverty, wherever it is in the world, is our Concern.

El Niño is back – and it is hitting communities hard.
Over 50 million more people are facing severe hunger, many already battered by conflict and climate shocks.
The consequences could be devastating. We must act now to protect the communities before impacts do the worst.

On October 27, Concern Worldwide will host “Food Security, Nutrition and Fragility: Strengthening EU Policy and Financing Responses” — an official Associated Event of Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2026.
Policymakers and practitioners will consider how the EU can protect progress on nutrition, sustain effective investment and ensure financing reaches people living in the most fragile contexts.
The conversation will include detail from the latest Progress Report on the EU Action Plan on Nutrition, which highlights both investment and political leadership have delivered real progress against hunger and malnutrition.
But these gains cannot be taken for granted.
At next week’s event, we will discuss how we can protect these gains, at a time of global fiscal constraints and an unprecedented contraction in ODA, prioritising nutrition is both a moral imperative and a high-yield investment. As the EU shapes the next MFF, protecting ODA and human development targets is essential for our shared future.
During Ireland’s #EUPresidency2026, the EU has a defining opportunity to keep food security and nutrition central to its future policy and financing priorities.
The next time you hear about cuts to official development assistance and international humanitarian funding, be aware of what exactly that means.
In yesterday's Irish Times, Concern Worldwide staff spelt out the impact of these cuts in #Liberia, #Somalia and #Sudan.
It means rising malnutrition, shortfalls in vital supplies, and the absence of support at times of impending humanitarian crises.
Cuts cost lives.

Concern warmly welcomes the increased funding allocation in #Budget2027 for official development assistance, announced today.
“At a time when many donor countries are cutting their aid budgets, Ireland’s continued commitment to a strongly values-based approach to international development is particularly important,” CEO Dominic Crowley said.
"Today’s Budget recognises the vital role of ODA in supporting people facing acute need, particularly in fragile and conflict-affected states."
“Ireland’s continued support for ODA, and its leadership in tackling extreme poverty and responding to and preventing humanitarian need, is valued both at home and around the world.”

Concern's programmes are broad, but gender equality, the focus of today’s #WomenofConcern event, underpins all of our work because it shapes people’s exposure to poverty and crisis, their access to resources and services, and their ability to influence decisions that affect their lives.
Speaking at today's Women of Concern event, Concern CEO Dominic Crowley, thanked those gathered for their support and outlined the challenges that humanitarian organisations are facing across the globe.

Orla sat down with us for a chat before today's Women of Concern event at the Round Room at The Mansion House, Dublin.
The annual event raises awareness amongst the business community in Ireland, of Concern’s humanitarian work and the issues facing people in lower-income countries.
Despite working in very different cultures and contexts over the course of her career, Orla has noticed common threads that unite people.
We are delighted to honour esteemed Irish journalist @OrlaGuerin today at the 2026 Women of Concern lunch.
Orla is the BBC’s Senior International Correspondent and has dedicated her career to reporting from around the world on active conflicts and the humanitarian impacts of those conflicts in places such as Haiti, Sudan and Ukraine.
