Contra all of the talk about how OpenAI and other companies are hyping up AI risks, former OAI employees @sjgadler and @DKokotajlo testified before the UK House of Commons that they received implicit and explicit pressure to minimize frank talk of AI risks while at OpenAI
Watch: Ex-OpenAI researchers @sjgadler and @DKokotajlo tell a UK House of Commons committee they faced pressure not to talk about the danger of what OpenAI is building. Kokotajlo recalls higher-ups in OpenAI mentioning how when people understand what the company is building, they’re not going to let them do it. In another instance, someone even mentioned copying “TikTok’s playbook” and using OpenAI’s platform to “get tons of our users and influencers to go promote the benefits of our technology.”

The Business, Innovation, Science and Trade Committee has just heard from former @OpenAI and @AnthropicAI researchers in the first panel of our session on AI adoption, safety and governance. It was quite an eye-opener. Here's what I learned 👀👇 1/2

The Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act was introduced by Sen. Sanders & Rep. Casar. We're glad to see it focus on the correct response to this extinction threat: banning superintelligent AI at home, preventing it abroad. We also have some disagreements, laid out in the post.
We agree with President Trump: America must stay ahead of China in building AI for economic competitiveness and defense. But superintelligent AI is something else entirely: not a tool, but swarms of fully autonomous AIs that we cannot control, powerful enough to outcompete humanity. Developed anywhere, superintelligent AI threatens the life of every American. We are excited to see the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act open the discussion in Congress about how the U.S. should address this threat: ban superintelligent AI at home, and lead the effort to prevent its development anywhere else. Now that this bill has kicked off the discussion, we encourage Congress to focus on preventing superintelligent AI. Rather than a pause on all advanced AI, we recommend targeting the projects pursuing superintelligent AI as we speak and putting American security at risk. blog.controlai.org/p/the-fir…

More leaders are speaking publicly about the dangers of developing superintelligence.
Two more MLAs have backed our campaign! Colin McGrath (@ColinSDLP) and Timothy Gaston (@TGastonMLA). Over 160 UK lawmakers are calling for binding regulation on the most powerful AIs, recognizing the risk of extinction posed by superintelligent AI.

Super intelligent AI poses risks to international security and a potential extinction threat to humanity. It’s why I support the all party Artificial Superintelligence Security Bill introduced in @HouseofCommons this week by @alexsobel MP, working with @ControlAI This will require international action and I have signed a joint letter to @andyburnham calling for UK leadership. We tell him “Our upcoming presidency of the G20 offers an unmissable window to lead a coalition of the willing to tackle this national and global security threat.” Yesterday, my last act as outgoing chair of @HumanRightsCtte was to oversee our unanimous report on AI and Human Rights - to be published on Monday morning. Meanwhile, @theipaper has today published this report on the urgent challenges presented by AI.
The @HumanRightsCtte JCHR) will shortly be issuing its important report on AI and human rights - @JacobCoxon ‘s resignation underlines the urgency of addressing the challenges presented by AI. This was raised yesterday in a new Private Members Bill in @HouseofCommons by JCHR member @alexsobel MP which deserves all party support and the support of both Houses @UKHouseofLords

A former researcher at OpenAI tells @ErinBurnett he sees a 70% chance of globally catastrophic outcomes from AI: “If the AIs and robots don't actually care about humans and go rogue, then there's numerous ways that that could end very poorly for us.”

Lots of people are asking - but just how would AI create an extinction event? This film is well worth watching as an explainer of just one way it could. We need Governments across the world to rise to this challenge.
People understandably want to know how AI actually kills everyone. We made a video about one such scenario.

Very encouraging. Most people don't want superintelligent AI, and when policy makers understand what companies are actually trying to build, they usually agree it should be stopped. Claude and ChatGPT are pretty awesome tools. Recursively self-improving AI is a threat to humanity
With 71 colleagues I am calling on the Govt to work with us on my bill to prohibit the development of superintelligent AI and champion an international agreement We can then lead on preventing the extinction risk posed by superintelligence while preserving strategic AI ambitions

It's crazy that more countries haven't even _tried_ to avert superintelligence from being rushed into creation I'm glad to see politicians taking this increasingly seriously. Sure, it's not guaranteed to work, but it's at least worth the try
