I drew him with lighter colors one time. The higher contrast I think looks better tho so even this one still has pretty high contrast compared to the sonic 1 version. Personally tho I was never trying to completely replicate the original box art style.

In retrospect it's funny how most artists who try replicating the JP style (myself included) were using bad scans as a reference for Classic Sonic's colors all along when in reality he should look like the pic on the right

Also, I think in the later games he was made darker anyways. Sonic 1 had some sketches where he was basically this bright cyan. Sonic 2 and 3 don't seem to have as much of that. I've never actually seen the JP boxes in person tho so maybe they're a lot lighter too

People are saying they're wrong. It's correct tho. This is the sorta advice you'll see from professional artists in Japan. But ig they speak Japanese so English speakers don't know. Oh well.

"don't worry about your artstyle! it will develop on its own as you keep drawing" is actual poison, criminal advice. single handedly the reason why most stylized shit in the west (not counting professional work) is kilometers behind. go study your goats girl.

Also I don't understand why so many people seem to think this is some alternative to learning fundamentals? If you want to properly understand the sort of style you're aiming for you're obviously going to need to learn the fundamentals relevant for that style of drawing.

Well... Here's a fun bit of old concept art from when I started on Sonic 3 HD (2014 or so I don't remember). The idea is that the BG would have more variation depending on where you were in the zone. This is the end area of Angel Island Zone act 1, following the miniboss.
