You could spend years building the best DeFi protocol, only to lose users to a worse competitor because it got a button inside @phantom or @solflare or whatever.... Wallets will soon become the Google of Web3. Just as Google influences which websites get traffic, wallets are gaining enormous influence over which protocols people discover and use. Users can swap, bridge, stake, or borrow without EVER visiting the protocol providing the service. And they're already making money from this position: • @MetaMask charges 0.875% on swaps. • @phantom charges 0.85% on most swaps. That's $87.50 or $85 on a $10,000 swap. And this could get ugly for DeFi builders. • A single wallet integration could outperform months of marketing. • Wallets could decide which protocols receive most of the transaction volume. • Protocols could become easier to replace if users never develop loyalty to them. • Wallets could gain negotiating power over fees and integration terms. A wallet could prioritise a provider offering better revenue-sharing terms over one offering better execution or lower fees. And as wallets become the default entry point for more users, transparency around how these services are selected will become increasingly important.
