Share with your legislators! Scientific research has shown how children learn to read and how they should be taught. But many educators don't know the science and, in some cases, actively resist it. As a result, millions of kids are being set up to fail. apmreports.org/story/2018/09…

Maybe we should lower the reading cut score so we continue to promote students into grade levels where they don’t have the skills to be successful. Seems like #ALBOE believes that anyway.
The #ALBOE work session has resumed. First up is a discussion of the change in terminology in the Alabama Accountability Act. The term "failing school" is now called a "priority school." And priority status will be given to schools that earn a 'D' or an 'F' on the report card.

Screen ALL K-3 students for the risk factors of dyslexia. 💯💯 Only screening those “flagged” by a computer adaptive assessment is old school and part of the wait to fail model. 👎🏻👎🏻 #SayDyslexia Say it until they hear you! 📣📣👂🏻👂🏻

I can personally attest to this. We pulled our child from an "A" Massachusetts public school after 3rd grade, because she could not read at grade level proficiently (grade level is a low expectation). #FAPEdenied We were privileged to be able to sacrifice lifelong savings to enroll her in a Science of Reading #OrtonGillingham-based private school, and transport here each day, each way. It took two entire school years (i.e., 4th and 5th grade) of intensive 1:1 daily lessons to remediate the academic harm caused by Balanced Literacy (e.g., @LucyCalkins Units of Study, 3-cueing). #readingcrisis Tell me happens to the children (and their families) that cannot afford the financial burden of private tutoring &/or private school tuition &/or private transportation. “The link between academic failure and delinquency, violence and crime is welded to reading failure.” ~U.S. Department of Justice #LiteracyIsEquity in education. NO ONE will EVER convince me otherwise.

We need to keep the momentum of the literacy act implementation going, not slow it down.
