/6 Our estimate of infection fatality rate (IFR) is 1.5%, higher than most estimates due to considering undetected cases
/4 estimates of domestic spread rate among detected and undetected cases differed substantially through time
/3 we provide a new disease analytics model incorporating test volume and vaccination rates over 90 weeks of the pandemic to estimate total #COVID19 burden for each province and territory.
/2 under-reporting? Due to symptomatic, pauci-symptomatic, and pre-symptomatic cases, lack of testing, and low testing volumes.

Detailed information on prey features in the areas targeted by humpback whales will improve predictions of humpback foraging requirements, and in addressing the broader question of how humpback whales influence prey population dynamics in BC (e.g.,
herring).
4/5
Prey were significantly deeper when whales were present. Max acoustic prey detection avg depth was 84m deep when whales were present versus 60m when absent. This suggests that humpback whales in southern BC predominantly forage deep underwater.
3/5
We used active acoustic ‘prey mapping’ (think super fish-finder) to compare the two regions (500km apart): prey types (krill, fish, etc.) differed but the overall biomass in each region was remarkably similar!
2/5
We found that these two regions, where whales consistently forage, were more associated with higher zooplankton biomass — not fish biomass!
From 2018-2019 we studied two small regions at opposite ends of Vancouver Island (NE and SW tips) where humpback whales consistently forage.
Our new paper about what humpback whales are eating is out! doi.org/10.1139/cjfas-2024-0…
