As a final look-back piece, I wrote in today’s Health Services Journal about what I think is one of the NHS’s biggest unresolved problems: who is ultimately accountable when national promises aren’t delivered locally - and what does that mean for democratic oversight?

Reflecting on my last role, I’ve written an article in Civil Society on why government has much more to gain than to fear when it comes to campaigning charities. civilsociety.co.uk/voices/cr…

“Osteoporosis lived in the shadows. Today, things are changing.”
At our 40th anniversary reception at Clarence House, hosted by Her Majesty The Queen, our CEO Craig Jones reflected on four decades of progress – from making osteoporosis visible, to transforming care and building a future where fractures can be prevented.
Read Craig’s powerful speech on our journey, the impact of our supporters and partners, and our ambition to create a future with no more broken bones and no more broken lives.

The Queen has hosted a reception for @RoyalOsteoSoc at Clarence House marking its 40th anniversary. Camilla is president of the charity, which she has supported since 1994, the year her mother Rosalind Shand died of the bone disease.

We were pleased to welcome so many MPs and parliamentary staff to our Great British Bone Check parliamentary drop-in yesterday.
MPs learned more about the challenges of diagnosing osteoporosis, and how earlier identification, our online risk checker and the rollout of Fracture Liaison Services can help people get the treatment and support they need before a lifechanging fracture.

At 2.30pm today, Lord Black will be asking @DHSCgovuk's Baroness Merron about an update on the gov's commitment for universal fracture liaison services in England. Two years into this parliament there have been more than 80 Ministerial commitments on this but no new services yet.
Can @jamesmurray_ldn and/or @andyburnham deliver on this where their predecessors have been unable?

Speaking on ITV Lunchtime News, Craig Jones, Chief Executive of the Royal Osteoporosis Society, said: "People with osteoporosis feel they're being asked to wait indefinitely by the Government and are left wondering if, in reality, they have been abandoned."
After 85 promises from the Government for the roll-out of Fracture Liaison Services in all parts of England, we are calling on @jamesmurray_ldn to publish an implementation plan.

In case you missed it 👇
Craig Jones, Chief Executive of the Royal Osteoporosis Society, was on BBC Breakfast News today talking about the Fracture Liaison Service postcode lottery in England:
“Today's figures show England is flatlining on osteoporosis diagnosis. Ministers in Whitehall owe it to people to be honest about whether and how they are going to implement their promise to roll out these clinics to every area.
At the current pace, we won't see this pledge fulfilled until 2064 – eight general elections' time. Ministers have promised this roll-out 85 times, but a pledge on paper saves no lives at all.
A new Health Secretary offers the chance to rescue this policy, turn this around and save lives. We're calling on @jamesmurray_ldn to publish an implementation plan before Parliament's summer recess, so people in England can benefit from the same life-saving care now offered in Wales.”

I was on ITN Lunchtime News yesterday - people with osteoporosis are left wondering if the indefinite delay from Ministers is, in reality, abandonment. Ministers’ 2030 target can just about still be met, but only with a published plan. @jamesmurray_ldn @DHSCgovuk @SharonHodgsonMP

Soon: On ITN Lunchtime News to talk about why an implementation plan is needed if people are to have faith in govt’s Fracture Liaison Services policy. 4,000 people already died following hip fractures we could have prevented since 2024 @DHSCgovuk @jamesmurray_ldn @SharonHodgsonMP
Irene broke her spine picking up her 2 year old grandchild because her area didn’t have a Fracture Liaison Service. After 85 promises, if government really intends national rollout what objection can there be to publishing a timetable? @DHSCgovuk @jamesmurray_ldn @SharonHodgsonMP
Mail on Sunday War on Osteoporosis: After 80 commitments, there's still no timetable, funding or milestones. If Ministers actually do plan FLS rollout to all areas, we hope they'll see no problem backing this Health Bill amendment so a delivery plan can be published. @jamesmurray_ldn @SharonHodgsonMP mol.im/a/15935285 via @DailyMail
My favourite film is Aftersun, which I’ve just watched for about the seventh time. This subtle film conveys so much through small moments. A young dad and his 11 year old daughter on a holiday in Turkey looked back on 20 years later. It’s astonishingly good.
Mail on Sunday War on Osteoporosis campaign: It’s very troubling that Ministers say there’s no plan or milestones to achieve their policy of Fracture Liaison Services in every area, despite having reiterated the pledge over 70 times in Parliament. Pls rescue this @jamesmurray_ldn @SharonHodgsonMP
Beyond thrilled to have been given this lovely trophy at the Welsh Government Bone Health conference. Wales has trebled its fracture identification rate over the last three years. It’s been so amazing to see. #daiiawn #betterbones
Mail on Sunday War on Osteoporosis campaign: New figures show 164,000 women have suffered life-changing fractures due to the delivery gap on the Government’s osteoporosis policy. We’re asking @jamesmurray_ldn @SharonHodgsonMP to publish a plan before recess to rescue the policy.
