A paradox: Minimally guided instruction sees creativity, curiosity and critical thinking as inputs, ie general skills to be cultivated directly and then sort of aimed at content. In contrast, explicit instruction treats them as outputs, ie the by-product of deep, well-organised domain knowledge, not things you can train in the abstract.
In other words, progressive education sees creativity/curiosity/critical thinking as things you need to teach explicitly ("we need to teach 21st Century skills not facts" etc) whereas explicit instruction sees these things as emerging naturally, or as a by-product of having learned a lot of knowledge about a domain.

Four years ago, Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine…Four years of loss. Four years of courage. Four years of defending freedom.

As Russia has weaponised winter, I urge Australians to support the Warmth for Ukraine fundraising campaign launched by the Ukrainian community.
The situation in Ukraine is critical:
⚠️ Millions of people are without electricity, heating, or running water
⚠️ A state of emergency has been declared in the energy sector
⚠️ Every power plant in Ukraine has been targeted by Russia
⚠️ Temperatures are plunging to –20°C overnight
📢 Please consider donating to the AFUO-supported campaigns:
💙 Ukraine Crisis Appeal: ukrainecrisisappeal.org
💛 Future Ukraine – Warmth for Ukraine: futureukraine.org.au/events/…
Every contribution helps keep families warm and saves lives this winter.

Many questions in healthcare research involve a notion of cause and effect, so it’s no surprise that causal inference is currently undergoing a surge in popularity in health research.
Health researchers need to fully understand the underlying assumptions

📢 A brilliant session today hosted by NOCA with special thanks to Associate Professor Craig Lockwood from the Joanna Briggs Institute (@JBIEBHC).
We are exploring how shared learning and international collaboration can drive quality improvement and evidence-based practice. Discussions have spanned everything from joint publication opportunities in @JBI_EI, to implementation pilot projects using NOCA audit data to enable local practice change.
Grateful for the insights and looking forward to progressing collaboration that has real impact for healthcare in Ireland and beyond.
