"Not one person in a hundred knows how to be silent and listen, no, nor even to conceive what such a thing means. Yet only then you can detect, beyond the fatuous clamour, the silence of which the universe is made."

Meaning may be healthier than happiness.
23-year study: A sense of purpose is a more robust predictor of longevity than life satisfaction. Having worthwhile goals is a source of vitality.
It’s nice to feel happy today. It’s important to have something to strive for tomorrow.

COMMITMENT IN THE CREATIVE PROCESS
Tending to our creative selves means bumping up against all the things that have kept up where we are, and having to move beyond them. It can mean letting go of certain assumptions and stories that no longer serve us.
There is a qualitative difference between the louder (and short-lived) discomfort that comes from being present to resistances in the creative process as we move through them, and the quieter, (but almost constant flat background noise) discomfort of not engaging our creative selves."
Discipline to help stay connected to our creative selves means really living into it, owning it, and embodying it - day by day - caring enough about ourselves to show up for our creative selves even when not feeling it.
Reconnect to more creative flow:
• Make and keep at least one small commitment to yourself each day. You gain your own trust this way.
• Take small actions every day until you do feel connected to your creative flow again.
• Do something, even when you don't feel like it. Taking action, even when not feeling like it, can get us to start feeling like it. Sometimes is it's getting into the feeling in order to take action. Other times, taking action can lead to the feeling. Play with both.
By moving energy through small actions, we access a feeling of more flow. By keeping your commitments to ourselves, we build confidence in our capacity to do what we say we will. Discipline helps carry us over in the times when we feel like it, and in times when we don't.
"Loving discipline means showing up for things even when they don’t feel good at first or when they make us uncomfortable. Loving ourselves enough to think long term." ~ Dr. Nicole LePera
Practicing keeping small commitments helps us take ourselves more seriously when we make larger ones to ourselves, and others. We gain credibility with ourselves - more trust in ourselves and in creative process.

The purpose of debriefing bad decisions is not to blame and shame. It's to grow and change.
Failure is an invitation to reflection. The most important question is not who's at fault—it's how to improve.
Yesterday's mistakes are lessons to learn today and apply tomorrow.

James Hollis, excellent here, on how individuation serves our relationships and society.

ALT The paradox of individuation is that we best serve intimate relationship by becoming sufficiently developed in ourselves that we do not need to feed off others. Similarly, we best serve our society by being individuals, by contributing to the dialectic necessary for the health of any group. Each chip in the social mosaic contributes best by the richness of its own unique colouration. We remain most socially useful when we have something unique, our fullest possible selves, to offer. — James Hollis, The Middle Passage: From Misery to Meaning in Midlife

Do not use your energy to worry. Use your energy to believe, to create, to learn, to think and to grow.
