On 17 June 1949 an Up goods passes St Fagans signal box west led by Modified Hall class 4-6-0 No 6948 Holbrooke Hall. Well into the second year of nationalisation, the loco retains GWR livery, with its number on the buffer beam and has yet to receive a BR smoke box numberplate.
Starting my usual read through of the next Southern Way, No 75, published in November, crecy.co.uk/product/the-sout…. As always a little taster, E6020 new in February 1966, is seen four months after it entered service, with the empty stock of the ‘Bournemouth Belle’ .

#OnThisDay 171 years ago the Wimbledon & Croydon Railway opened, partly using the 1802 Surrey Iron Railway route. A real railway backwater, this 1980 @jerrycee55 image of Beddington Lane captures it beautifully; unrecognisable today as part of London Trams buff.ly/8yQWrsJ
Mega shunt today at Bridgnorth to get Mk1 No 4399, converted to convey wheelchairs, into the Paint Shop. This involved first moving the chassis of No 34027 Taw Valley, currently being overhauled, and the PW Inspection Car which has just been in the Paint Shop and looks superb.
Just had another great day @svrofficialsite with the 101 class DMU on the Bridgnorth duty and the latest addition to the steam fleet, No 4150, on the Kidderminster set. Thé Valley always looks superb at this time of year as it takes on its Autumn colours.
Saw a couple of 156 units at Manchester Piccadilly yesterday on my way to Crecy HQ. Rare birds for me but checking my abc Rail Guide crecy.co.uk/ almost all of them are still in service with Northern and Scotrail. crecy.co.uk/

On 22 June 1963, ex-GWR 2-6-0 No 7337 leaves Dulverton with a train from Barnstaple to Taunton. In the bay platform is an Autotrain which will form an Exe Valley service, headed by 0-4-2T No 1421.

When a storm wrecked @svrofficialsite in June 2007 trains could only run from Bewdley to Kidderminster. Wandering around Bewdley yard, I found in a shed the chassis of a loco I’d forgotten we had. 20 years on, 4150 is restored, on a pit 50 yards across the tracks from that shed.
Under threatening skies, Black Five No 45338 pilots 2-6-4T No 42084 leaving Dewesbury with the 8.52am Bradford to Cleethorphes train on Saturday 11 August 1962. Given the date, this must have been a holiday extra. One of perhaps 75,000+ black and white prints in the Crecy Archive

Tomorrow I'm starting the task of updating the Crecy Archive catalogue to make it again fully accessible for authors. There'll be many distractions like this; on 23 April 1956 B12/3 No 61553 heads a Grantham to Peterborough local near Corby Glen station, which closed in June 1959

#OnThisDay 174 years ago the GWR extended from Landore near Swansea to a temporary terminus at Carmarthen via Llanelli, Pembrey & Burry Port and Ferryside. Near the latter is pictured, there are some lovely coastal stretches along this route. Andrew Bell buff.ly/QTtYBm3

This is my annual attempt at being a German trainspotter, mostly I’m not sure what I’m looking at but this is a very fast train bound for Giessen racing through Gross Karben about 30 kilometres north of Frankfurt.

#OnThisDay 142 years ago the Circle Line was completed through the opening of Mansion House to Tower Hill, plus a branch from Aldgate to Whitechapel opened, the latter we see here: the Underground passing over the Overground... always amuses! Timara Easter buff.ly/dqEhDSO

ALT 2014 image taken from the southbound Overground platform at Whitechapel with a Class 378 departing the northbound while above an eastbound refurbished D78 District Line service departs for Upminster. This view is impossible now as the new concourse accessing the Elizabeth Line was built above, rafting over the Overground platforms (and of course the D78 stock are long gone too)
