We’ve heard the questions. Here are the facts. The proposed UTME centre in Ottawa has generated conversations, questions and different opinions. And that’s okay. As a public institution, JAMB welcomes scrutiny and remains committed to being accountable to the people we serve. But accountability works best when it is grounded in facts, context and fairness. The Ottawa proposal is about expanding access to eligible Nigerians abroad, not establishing another permanent JAMB office or spending public funds on a new facility. It is also part of a wider effort to strengthen the connection between Nigerians in the diaspora and Nigerian tertiary education.

For Nigerians in Canada, the UTME is coming closer to home. 🇳🇬🇨🇦 JAMB is working towards establishing a UTME centre in Ottawa, Canada, expected to commence operations in 2027. The proposed centre will make it easier for eligible Nigerians in Canada and across North America to sit for the UTME without travelling to Nigeria solely for the examination. It also represents a bigger opportunity to strengthen the connection between Nigerians in the diaspora and Nigerian tertiary education. More access. Fewer barriers. Closer to home. #JAMB #UTME2027 #NigeriaInCanada #JAMBUpdates #TheTrustWeHold #ThePeopleWeServe

I am looking for ‘Aminu from Yobe State’, my ‘21st reason to stay alive’, the stranger who saved me in the deserts of Libya between al Gatrun and Sabha on the night of Wednesday June 24. He vanished into the anonymity of darkness before I could even say ‘thank you’. If you know an Aminu who migrated to Libya through the backdoor in the first half of this year, and he can confirm the encounter I narrated in Part III of @fijnigeria’s migrant investigation, please connect me to him. I am willing to activate his emergency evacuation from Libya (if it interests him), and find him a job in Nigeria. One good turn, they say…

Five days into my next undercover investigation, set to be released by @fijnigeria later this week, I sent the picture in Frame 1 to my three-man backroom team. They all laughed at me, one of them remarking I looked “like a fisherman”. The pictures in frames 2 and 3 are from my 44th day on the field. Nobody was in ebullient mood this time. They all screamed instead. None of them could say it, but I knew I could pass for a mad man on the streets. Meanwhile, Frame 4 is who I was before I embarked on the project. It is the first time ever that I’ve given the public a glimpse into the making of an undercover investigation. I do it this time to contextualise public understanding of the physical, material and mental cost of investigative reporting. Behind every daring work of investigation you have read is several weeks, sometimes months, of self-sacrifice by the journalist. Of higher importance, I do it to remind younger journalists that investigative journalism isn’t the white-collar stardom propeller many seem to think it is; more often than not, it is about getting your hands dirty while still believing this is hands down the best job in the world! It feels good to be fully back on social media after nearly five months out…

While Nigeria slept, they stood guard. When they returned, Nigeria stood for them. A nation’s gratitude. A soldier’s honour. 🇳🇬
