It is sickening that the USA is now lifting sanctions on Russian fuel, and transparently ridiculous to blame Ukraine for the spike in prices that obviously began with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Putin is murdering innocent Ukrainian civilians every day. The Ukrainians are fighting for their lives. And yet the White House is apparently determined to force American drivers to bankroll Putin’s slaughter. It won’t work and I doubt it will make much difference to the price of fuel. If we want Russian oil and gas back on the world market then let’s end this war - with a free, sovereign and independent Ukraine.

There’s no doubt that Putin fears the return of his army home. That is why he is so afraid of the war ending without victory. And there will be no victory. He is physically afraid of his own army. That is why, if there is no ceasefire backed by specific security guarantees, he will return to war. And this time, others may be the ones under attack. Today, Ukraine is de facto the second army of NATO – one that is not inferior to the second army in the world. And that is why NATO needs us – specifically us – de jure. This is already a fact recognized by all leaders. Putin will remain in the Kremlin until his death, and he has one goal: the restoration of the Soviet Union. Without Ukraine, this is impossible, and that is why things are so difficult for us. From answers to journalists’ questions. (3/3)

"Lemass was extraordinarily prescient that Europe’s dependence on the US security umbrella could lead to problems in the future. Ireland, he stressed, was militarily unaligned, not neutral. In any confrontation between “East and West, we will be on the side of the West. Ireland will side with democracy against any socialist or totalitarian system. But we consider we could give more service to the West outside a formal alliance. “I, personally, would not at all disagree with de Gaulle that Europe must be capable of an independent defence, if this is feasible, because there is a great deal of sense in his contention that when the chips are down, America would not commit suicide for the sake of Europe.” My article in @IrishCentral about Seán Lemass: The Lost Memoir. irishcentral.com/opinion/oth…
